UNIFORM

In 1996, the Werribee Banner reported that “the Good News Primary School Committee has spent much time in the design of a neat, practical and low cost uniform to be appealing to the community and to engender pride in the students. The colours of Teal, Navy and White were selected, and a winter, summer and sport uniform were created. Coordinator of the uniform committee, Mrs Lyn Schier, believes that the uniform is both stylish and modern, with crisp and fresh colours.” As part of the uniform, black footwear was the school’s policy but in the winter of 1997, the need for an alternative option became urgently apparent! Undeveloped, barren land and drainage problems created muddy conditions that little feet simply couldn’t navigate. The solution? Gumboots! For a number of years, students and teachers alike wisely opted for gumboots outside and slippers inside when Melbourne’s wintry conditions descended. GNLC has always aimed for students to feel they belong and have a sense of pride, while presenting a positive image to the wider community. In 2011, the school’s original uniform was expanded to include a skirt, blouse, blazer and College House polos. Currently, our uniform caters to the age and learning activities of students. In Junior Years we offer a play-based option with the addition of the rugby polo, ponte pant and skort. Middle and Senior Years students wear full summer uniform during Terms 1 and 4. Full winter uniform is worn throughout Terms 2 to 3 and required at formal events.

The original school crest was created by graphic designer Claire Maroske (then Keeler). The initial concept was an open Bible to signify active learning and our motto “Growing through the Word”; a cross to reflect our Christian faith; and children reading scripture. To some the outline of the book was thought to be a silhouette of the You Yangs, which in the early years could be seen on a clear day. “In 2006 a digital form of the logo was created and the name Good News Lutheran School was added,” recalls Jan Baker, former Principal. “After the cross was installed in 2007, a new logo with a more modern design was created. This incorporated the cross and was in preparation for the introduction of secondary education. Roy Walshe, a graphic designer, was responsible for the upgrade to the original and also our current logo.”

Our College motto is “Growing through the Word.” In her Principal’s Report in the 2011 edition of the school magazine, Jan Baker explained that the motto, chosen in 1997, reflected the ethos on which Good News was founded. “God’s word tells us that the one thing we can be sure of which never changes is God’s love for each of us. That is the good news we share with all our students,” she wrote. Twenty five years on, “Growing through the Word” continues to guide students and staff as they journey through Christ-centred learning together. MOTTO

COLOURS It’s no accident that the colours of GNLC are distinctive. Tim Keeler AM, who was a consultant to the school for several months during its initial development, made sure the chosen palette was unique to the area. Tim remembers visiting every school within the catchment radius, and with a paint chart in hand he eliminated those colour combinations already in use at other schools. The result was our chosen colors of teal, navy and white, which remain the colours of GNLC 25 years later.
