The Good News Story

WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL?

Memories and reflections from students, staff, parents and friends of GNLC.

“I treasured the opportunity to design the Poppy Garden to commemorate Anzac Day and to show respect to the soldiers who fought for the freedom of our country. This opportunity enabled me to implement my design skills on a real project and contribute to the legacy of the school.” Kaitlyn Ash, past student “My most treasured moment is when I found out I got the role of ambassador. All the candidates were gathered in the Middle Years auditorium and what made this moment so special wasn’t because I was successful but because everyone else was so supportive. What we learn through core values such as respect and courage is huge for our development.” Shreshta Vangapally, past student “GNLC helps students to become better at handwriting and get knowledge and learn how to research. I think I am a better person at Good News because I’ve become smarter because my teachers have always pushed me harder than I can go by myself.” Amelia Powell, current student “My time as College Captain gave me some of my fondest memories because of how involved our Student Leadership Council was with the College. I’m still so proud of what the Student Leadership Council achieved that year, and the impact I saw it have.” Liberty Powell, past student “Our school musicals were a beautiful escape from the stress of classes and a place I felt accepted and welcomed. One of the greatest things I have ever done was go on the cultural immersion trip to Japan. That opportunity was incredible and life changing. I also just had the unconditional support from the teachers and aides that encouraged me academically and helped me grow individually.” Takarah Williams, past student “When we had our fortnightly PC (Pastoral Care) session in Year 11, Mr Gannell would teach us life skills like how to change a car tyre, reserving a table at a restaurant and so on. That was very, very fun and helpful!” Megan Wedding, past student “People are attracted to GNLC for our caring, welcoming and accepting community.” Doris Richards, past parent and former staff member “People come to GNLC for the care and support the staff give the students. Staff support the growth of the ‘whole’ child holistically. This is seen in the way teachers care for and build relationships with students. Our students leave GNLC knowing that they are valued members of the community and that they can make a difference in the world.” Nathan Shrowder, former Head of Middle Years

“I think we were always very clear about who we were as a Lutheran school, and that is Christ-centred, student-focused and with a sense of community. Very early on as I began my time there, I was asked quite a number of times by parents and others ‘what kind of school are we going to be?’ They meant a ‘sporting school’, or a ‘technology school’. What we needed to be was a pathway school that knew its students and supported them in making their way to the next phase

of their educational or working life.” Simon Hughes, former Principal

“I will always remember the friendly working environment and work colleagues who are always willing to provide assistance and guidance.” Kelly McGrath, current staff member “The most heart-warming part of being a parent at GNLC is the great support from the school and staff. They were very approachable and always caring and helpful. GNLC helped my children thrive and encouraged them to do their best.” Michelle Mitchell, past parent “The Duke of Edinburgh is an amazing program that has helped me grow as a person, a Good News student and as a member of my community.” Elizabeth Kotvas, past student “If I had to choose only one thing that I treasure from my time at GNLC, it would be all the memories I made in Pedal Prix.” Sophie Coles, past student “I fondly remember Mr Schmidt, who was my teacher in Term 1 of Year 4. He made me want to strive to do my very best. He always created extensions for us. He was funny and not too strict. He created good learning spaces for us to learn the way we need to learn.” Lucas Powell, current student “Among my memories of volunteering at Good News is cooking on the Pedal Prix trips away and associating with all the teachers that were involved and seeing how caring the teachers were with all the kids.” Andrew Coles, past parent “When I arrived at Good News in 2013, the school was in an exciting place. The Junior School had only two classes in each year level and Prep was beginning a third stream classroom. Eight years later, there were four classrooms in each year level. When schools grow and change, there is a risk of losing the ‘close community’ feel. I am grateful to have served in a community that provided exceptional education to children, warmly welcomed families and lived its Christian values.” Janet Moeller, former Head of Junior Years “What I witnessed was a team commitment to making every RedX Racing Human Powered Vehicle event a memorable adventure.” Brooke Peters, current staff member
