The federal gasoline tax rebate is available to any municipality that has at least one working service station pump within its boundaries. But the provincial gas tax rebate is just for towns that have a working public transit system and that is not going to change for now. Bob Chiarelli, Ontario’s transporation and infrastructure minister, offers no hope for many rural municipalities hoping to get a share some day of the provincial gasoline tax. The past seven days have seen highway patrol and general duty officers make a point of checking whether drivers and their passengers have their seatbelts secure and that anyone with small children inside a vehicle has them in a secure and approved safety seat. Statistics show that a child in a CSA- approved booster seat has a 75 per cent greater chance of survival in almost any type of collision compared to a child who is not either in a safety seat or not wearing a seat belt. The main problem police find during most vehicle safety checks is that a child booster seat is not properly installed or else the child is not secured the right way. “Children are our future and they deserveeveryprotectionwecangivethem,” stated OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis, in a press release. “Please ensure that any child is properly secured while travelling in your vehicle. Their lives depend on it.” The Eastern Ontario OPP regional of- fice reported that nine traffic fatalities in the region during the first three months of 2012 resulted from failure to use seatbelts. Provincial traffic rules allow for a $240 fine and two points on a driver’s licence for failing to either use a seatbelt or failing to make sure all passengers inside a vehicle are using seatbelts.
