Hyundai: the mighty Korean brand
If there is something to be said about Hyundai, it’s that this Korean car maker has succeeded in becoming one of the world’s leaders in the automotive industry in less than 30 years. It looks like noth- ing will stop Hyundai from continuing its great streak, with a line-up of vehicles to fill all the needs of today’s consumers. Indeed, the Hyundai line-up begins with the small, redesigned Accent, a sub-com- pact available as a sedan or a hatchback and featuring a new, more powerful four- cylinder engine. It is followed by the very popular Elantra, also recently redesigned. It just won the Car of the Year award! This car is also available as a modern looking station-wagon called the Touring. Next comes the incredibly modern Sonata, a mid-sized car available with a standard four-cylinder engine, a more powerful turbocharged version of the same engine, or with a very economical hybrid motor. Hyundai also offers a big
traditional rear-wheel drive sedan called the Genesis, which can be powered by a V-6 or a V-8 engine. Its coupe version is only available with a turbocharged four- cylinder or a V-6. The biggest Hyundai available is the superb V-8 powered rear- wheel drive, the Equus. By the way, the big news this year at Hyundai is the avail- ability of a superb, well-designed sports car called the Veloster! Hyundai also offers small trucks, SUVs, or crossovers. The smallest is the very popu- lar front-wheel or all-wheel drive Tucson, followed by the mid-sized Santa Fe, front- or all-wheel driven. The biggest Hyundai available is the impressive Veracruz, an almost full-sized SUV that can seat seven passengers. This front- or all-wheel drive is powered by a strong V-6 engine.

Mazda’s new philosophy starts with the CX-5 Japanese car maker Mazda is evolving its manufacturing philosophy, which it now calls SkyActiv. This change is reflected in the company’s new engines, transmissions, suspen- sion, brakes, steering mechanisms, and even new structures. The small Mazda3 car does offer one of the new engines and transmissions, but it is the all-new Mazda CX-5 small crossover — accompanying the bigger CX-7 and CX-9 — that will show off the full new approach. The CX-5 also replaces the older Tribute SUV and has a much more modern design. The CX-5 uses the base 2.0-litre, in-line four-cylinder engine from the new SkyActiv engi- neering approach. It also uses one of the two new SkyActiv transmissions, a manual or an automatic, both with six speeds. The CX-5 is available with front- or all-wheel drive. The all-new CX-5 will have to compete against some of the most popular vehicles on the market in one of the most popular segments, that of the compact SUV-CUV which includes players like the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Kia Sportage.
