Rockland native Derek Roy has been na- med to the Team Canada men’s hockey roster for the 2018 Olympics. As there are no NHL players to participate in the 2018 Olympics, countries turned to European leagues and AHL teams to find their Olympians. Derek Roy, a former NHL player who now plays with Linkoping in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), has been called up to the roster for Team Canada in the 2018 Olympics. Roy was born and raised in Rockland and grew up playing with the Clarence Minor Hockey Association. He also used to sponsor the Clarence Castors by providing the players with hockey sticks. Roy was first drafted to the NHL in 2001 at the age of 18 and played for the Buffalo Sabres. Throughout his NHL career, he also played for the Dallas Stars, the Vancouver Canucks, the St. Louis Blues, the Nashville Predators and the Edmonton Oilers. Now, at the age of 34, Roy plays in the Swedish Hockey League and will be part of TeamCanada in the 2018 Olympics held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Olympics will be held fromFebruary 9 to 25. Mason Raymond and Ben Scrivens, also big names who used to play in the NHL, are alongside Roy on the TeamCanada ros- ter.

Roy a grandi en jouant avec l’Association de hockey mineur de Clarence et a rejoint la LNH en 2001 avec les Sabres de Buffalo. Il joue présentement en Suède. —photo fournie
