of sin, sickness or death. He needs no Saviour because he is his own saviour. They steadfastly claim that if one believes faithfully “ in the Christ-life, he will never die” (Talks on Truth, p. 150) but they die as do other men and women. Charles Fillmore, his first wife Myrtle and his second wife Cora, are in their graves. So are thou sands o f their followers who be lieved by diet, and denial o f sick ness, and their kind o f praying, and making affirmations against sin, sickness and death they could live forever. Unity has embraced the repul sive teaching o f transmigration o f souls, taken from Hinduism. The goal is the same as that of this East Indian heathen religion, the final emancipation and re union with Brahm, or cessation o f being. U n i t y has substituted Christian names for Nirvana and Brahm. “We are coming closer to that great ultimate, the incarnation of Christ. . . . Our human incarna tions are steps along the way to the great incarnation. . . . Rein carnation is the gospel o f the sec ond chance. . . . You will continue your progress from the point where you left off, and you will rear a new body. . . . Eventually you: will have purified your mind and your body to such a degree that you do not need to relinquish it to corruption but will be able to quicken it to spiritual expres sion as did Jesus the Christ” (Have We Lived Before? Wilson, pp. 61-99, portions). Fillmore had a cheery note for his followers: “We fall asleep without any sense o f apprehen sion . . . the soul leaves the body, yet it does not fail to return in due time to take up a body . . . if his life has been lived by the Golden Rule, his souls basks in the sunshine o f a world Elysian and his hope o f heaven is fo r a season fulfilled” (Talks on Truth, pp. 47, 48). For all its “ sw e e tn e s s and light” Unity is one o f the most heartless and cold-blooded denials o f the Gospel in existence. HU

overcame” (Talks on Truth, p. 164). His incarnation is denied by Unity: “ To say that Jesus Christ was a man as we are men is not true. . . . He was one with the absolute principle o f Being. He was that Being, to all intents and purposes” (Talks on Truth, p. 169). Unity and Salvation What kind o f salvation does Unity teach if it does not believe in salvation from sin as revealed in the Word o f God? “ Salvation is finally attained when the cycle o f rebirth is bro ken and man comes to birth no more. The true spiritual body is to replace the physical body and the man becomes like Christ. This is to be done here on earth . . . eternal life means conscious exist ence in the body” (Talks on Truth, pp. 150-151). Unity rejects the new birth. “ Being ‘born-again’ or ‘born from above’ is not a miraculous change that takes place in man; it is the establishment o f that which has always existed as the perfect-man idea o f Divine Mind” (Christian Healing, p. 24). “ This being is spiritual man, who will be equal with God, when he overcomes or handles with wisdom and power the faculties o f the body” (Twelve Powers o f Man, p. 163). “ I f you fully recognize the fact that the God that dwells in you dwells in all men, you know that each one’s own Lord, the Christ within each one, will make no mistake. . . . Your Lord is the Christ within y o u r own being” (Lessons in Truth, p. 108). Fillmore makes very plain what he means: “Man is the direct offspring o f Divine Mind, God’s idea o f perfect man. This is the only begotten Son, the Christ, the Lord God, the Jeho vah, the I AM. . . . This Jehovah or divine idea o f perfect man, forms the manifest man and calls his name Adam” (Mysteries of Genesis, p. 12). The core o f Unity teaching, then, is the same as that o f Chris tian Science that man is incapable
