Kylee Conlin recently completed her graduate training as a Certified Athletic Trainer. She is a certified and licensed athletic trainer who graduated in May of 2018 with her Master’s degree in Athletic Training from Franklin College in Indiana. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training in 2016 from Eureka College. Kylee has been an active member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association since 2016 and a member of the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association since 2017. Kylee has also been a Graston technique provider since 2017. Kylee’s experiences include injury prevention, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation, and professional health and well-being. Kylee has conducted and published research with pediatric athletes concerning prevention of overuse injuries. Specifically, Kylee focused on the prevention of little league elbow among pre-pubescent baseball pitchers. Kylee was raised in Kewanee and graduated from Wethersfield High School in 2012. After playing softball 4 years in college, Kylee enjoys watching, playing, and mentoring young softball players around the area as often as she can. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as taking her dogs on long walks and for long rides in the car.

WHO NEEDS PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Are you moving like you should be? Your hips and knees are essential to everyday movement; whether you are sitting, standing, walking or running, you need your hips and knees in great shape. Sometimes, when your hips and knees are in pain, it can cause you to change the way that you are moving, causing you to change the flow and pace of your gait, which is the way that you walk. Other times, prolonged pain can cause you to stop doing movements that are indicative of healthy joints. If you’ve experienced any hip or knee pain and are considering whether physical therapy is a good choice for your health needs, consider the following: • From a standing position, are you able to lean over and touch your toes? If so, then this indicates that you have proper hip and low back flexibility. If not, then you may need to improve your flexibility and joint range of motion, and physical therapy could be helpful. • In a sitting position, can you comfortably cross your legs, leaving your ankle to rest comfortably on the opposite knee? If this is painful, or one knee constantly must be lower than the other, then this may be indicative of knee concerns that could be addressed with physical therapy. • From a standing position, with your feet planted flat on the floor, can you push your body into a squatting position? You should be able to squat all the way down so that your buttocks are almost touching your heels. If you aren’t able to do this, then physical therapy may be helpful in improving your range of motion. • Standing near a wall or countertop, arrange your feet so that you are standing with the heel of one foot touching the toes of the other, as if on a balance beam, and see how long you can stand still. Can you balance for 10 seconds? If not, then physical therapy may be able to improve balance and coordination.

The goal of any physical therapy program is to restore range of motion and improve flexibility and strength while reducing the general experience of pain. Every movement relies so heavily on the hips and knees that it makes it difficult to allow these joints to actually rest following an injury. Zucchini Linguine Recipe

INGREDIENTS • 1 lb tomatoes, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon chopped basil • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 2 teaspoons kosher salt

• 1 small red chile, seeded & minced • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 12 ounces linguine • 3 baby zucchini, thinly sliced • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving

DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, toss the tomatoes with the basil, parsley, garlic, salt, chile and olive oil. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the linguine; drain well. Add the linguine to the bowl along with the sliced zucchini and toss. Add the 1/4 cup of grated cheese, toss again and serve in bowls, passing more cheese at the table.

Hip Abduction Exercise For Hip Pain Lie on your side with your bottom leg straight, top knee bent at 90 degrees. Place a rolled towel between your waist and the floor, directly above your hips. Position your top hand on the top of your hip. Lift your top leg as high as you can keeping your knee bent at 90 degrees. At the top, bring your raised leg behind you as far as you can. DIRECT ACCESS TO PT IS FINALLY HERE

Governor Rauner signed into law HB 4643 on August 16th, 2018, giving patients direct access to physical therapy services. In other words, patients can now bypass the need to see their primary care physician to request a referral to physical therapy. When patients have a need for physical therapy, they can schedule an appointment for an evaluation with a PT, cutting the time to access pain relief and recovery from injury significantly. HB 4643 was introduced in the Illinois House of Representatives on February 7th, 2018. It passed out of the House by unanimous vote on April 27th, 2018. The Senate passed it unanimously on May 23rd, 2018, sending it to the Governor’s desk for approval. Direct Access has been a long-time goal for physical therapists throughout the country. Most states have some form of direct access. Prior to this major change, patients in Illinois were allowed to have a physical therapy evaluation, but treatment could not be provided until a physician’s referral was obtained. This often took days to get, and it would usually require a visit to the physician’s office. Illinois has now joined many other states in recognizing a physical therapist’s ability to evaluate a patient and determine a plan of care without physician supervision.

What this means to YOU: When you have an ache or a pain that is bothering you, or you aren’t moving the way you should be, you can call your physical therapist to set up an evaluation without having to contact your doctor or nurse practitioner first.

Howmany days per week should you walk for exercise?

Aim for a minimum of 3 walking days per week, and gradually work your way up to 5 or 6 days per week as you get fitter. For most people, walking can be done almost every day of the week because it’s low-impact and not as intense as other fitness programs. But don’t forget the importance of rest and recovery. Give yourself at least 1-2 days off each week.
