Home Water

Consumption

HOME WATER CONSUMPTION Water consumption and conservation are two important components of water usage. Usage inside and outside the home can add up quickly, here are some of the top water consumption culprits in the average household:

LAUNDRY 25 Gallons / Day If your machine has several load settings, use the one for light loads whenever you can. Use cold water as often as possible to save energy and to conserve the hot water for uses which cold water cannot serve.

TOILETS 2.6 Gallons / Flush Water leaks account for approximately 12% of all water use in the averageAmerican home, and the toilet is one of the most likely places to find them. Sometimes it is easy to tell that your toilet is leaking - you hear the sound of running water or a faint hissing or trickling. But many times, water flows through the tank silently, which is why these leaks are often overlooked.

BATH / SINK 36 Gallons / Day 1 Gallon / Minute Showers usually use less water than tub baths. Do this the next time you shower: Plug the drain and compare the water level with the level you would use for a tub bath. When using the sink, simply turn the faucet off before drying your hands and face. Installing a faucet-head aerator will also reduce the water flow rate.

SPRINKLER 17 Gallons / Minute for 1 Hour Running this cycle three times a week would use about 12,240 gallons per month. Don't over-water. Soil can absorb only so much moisture and the rest simply runs off.A timer will help, and either your kitchen timer or an alarm clock will do. An inch-and-a-half of water applied once a week will keep most Texas grasses alive and happy.

SWIMMING POOL 7,000 Gallon Loss / Annually Evaporation can claim your pool water over time.An 18 x 36 foot pool loses about 1 inch of water per week during the summer. Check your pool for leaks. Look for damp spots downstream of the pool and also, look for water-saturated soil near the pool, pumps, or poolplumbing equipment. Loose tiles or cracks could be an indicator or a leak so check for cracks and gaps in the bond beam.

DISHWASHER 11 Gallons / Wash

Never run your dishwasher without a full load. In addition to saving water, you'll find that your expensive detergent goes a lot further, and a significant energy saving will show up on the utility bill.
