On his way to becoming Mr. Universe

FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca

lifts his arms up and shows off his biceps as well as his upper body strength. All this is the epitome of countless hours of workout in local gyms. Monette is a body builder and well on his way to becoming one of the best. But what exactly is the act of “ bodybuilding ”? Mer- riam-Webster defines it as “the developing of the body through exercise and diet tomake

themuscles bigger and stronger, specifically for competitive exhibition.” “It is a sport that demands continuous effort and attention to detail, especially in those last few stages of contest preparation and it is also a sport where the outcome is measured by howmuch you put in,” admit- ted the young man. “In the end, you can never be satisfied because there is no such thing as perfection, and there’s always some- thing more you can do or something you can improve on.” For the Crysler native, the pouring sweat and the nearly constant muscle aches are very much worth it for, despite his young age, he has captured several titles, such as themuch covetedMr. Junior Ontario as well as 1 st place in the Ottawa regionals 2014, 1 st place Junior Champion and 5 th place in the Men’s Heavyweight Open division. When he first started working out, Mo- nette followed a strict diet, but now, the successful bodybuilder explained that he often has to follow more than one diet. “At this point, it’s no longer a diet but more a lifestyle I choose to follow and commit to in order to perform and fuel my body with the proper nutrients I need to excel and to achievemy goals,” he said. “Although, gene- rally speaking, yes I do follow a diet, it all depends on what phase I’m going through. If I’m in my pre contest phase, my diet will be geared towards preserving as much lean mass as possible while burning as much body fat as possible. If I’m inmy mass buil-

ding phase, my diet will be geared towards maximal leanmass gain withminimal body fat increase.” So where and when exactly did this love of bodybuilding start? According to the suc- cessful body builder, his passion for the sport was ignited when he was 16. “I first started training when I was 16 years old with no seri- ous intention behind it,” explainedMonette. “I progressed very quickly considering my young age and alsomanaged to build a solid amount of mass as well as strength in a very short amount of time. By the time I turned 18 years old, bodybuilding had slowly become more than just a passion, it had become a lifestyle.” But being a professional bodybuilder does have its challenges and the youngman does explain that the sport has taught him to be extremely patient. “Bodybuilding isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon and you need to put in the work day in and day out,” he expressed. “There are no shortcuts or easy way. Body- building is strictly based on hard work.” When not training in a gym, the young man is studious, as he’s also a student at the University of Ottawa. “I absolutely plan on making bodybuilding a career, and I want to pursue it for as long as I can regardless of making it a career or not,” said Monette. “As for my post-secondary education, I’m a second year student at the University of Ottawa, and my field of study is Human kinetics.”

It’s all a question of mind over matter for Embrun’s Jocelyn “Joss” Monette. Slowly creeping on stage, he makes his way towards the audience, every muscle in his body tense and seemingly chiseled in stone. Then, when facing the judges, he
