personal evangelism by Benjamin Weiss T n the stillness of the midnight, a rattling, clanging sound awa kened the jailor from deep sleep. It grew in intensity until it seemed that the entire prison would fall in a heap of rubble. Doors flew open with a clang and crash. It was a terrifying experience for the jailor. Half awake and totally confused, the jailor sprang up and saw the pri son doors standing open. As they still swayed back and forth they gave out an ominous creak and jangle. He re called that some important prisoners were confined in the inner cells. The penalty to a jailor for allowing prison ers to escape flashed into his mind. Bet ter to end it all now than to be dis graced and tortured as he had tortured many prisoners. In despair he drew his sword to end it all. “ Stop! Don’t injure yourself,” Paul called from his cell. “We are all here. None of us has escaped.” The impos sible had happened. Here were two important prisoners in their cell. The prison doors were wide open and they could easily have escaped. Yet they remained quietly seated in their cell. The jailor cried out in auguish of soul: “What must I do to be saved?” Listen to the answer. “ Be lieve on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shait be saved.” How simple, clear and quick was Paul’s ready an swer. The jailor accepted the solution. I wish Paul had included his name. He didn’t, so we will just call him “Mr. Believe.” He believed on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. “ No man cometh unto the Father but by me” (John 14:6). This is the basic requirement for everyone who asks how to be saved. Nothing short of believing in Jesus Christ as the one and only Saviour from sin is adequate. There is no other way of coming to God but this way. This is final and irrevocable. It is that and nothing else. Paul didn’t suggest any alternatives. He said, “Jesus is the way.” First believe; that is the way. Believe in Jesus Christ, God’s Son, the Saviour of the world. Our only answer to an inquiring, condemned sinner will be “ Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” Believe!
