A Trip Of A Lifetime With JAMES DESANTO, REGISTERED PHYSIOTHERAPIST NEWSLETTER

James DeSanto, Registered Physiotherapist at Core Solutions organized the trip of a lifetime for his son’s hockey team and all of their families this past month. James has been a coach since his daughter and son were old enough to skate. This summer, 13 players and their families (approx. 50 people in total) travelled to Beijing, China on July 24th to spend two weeks playing other hockey teams from all over the world! More importantly, their team were Bronze medal winners! It started with an idea that seemed impossible which turned into reality very quickly. With the Olympics going to Beijing China in 2022, CCM (a major hockey equipment manufacturer) decided to sponsor a minor hockey tournament to raise awareness of the sport in that country. In total, 70 teams from all over the world including: China, Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Korea, and Finland participated in this amazing tournament that included an opening and closing ceremonies. It was like getting ready for the Olympics for these boys! They contrived their team name, created the team logo, designed their jerseys and apparel, had 5 practices leading up to the games to get used to playing with each other and then even had a practice in China before the tournament started. And just like our Canadian Olympic team – this team kept a secret from their parents and fans – they hid a Loonie and Toonie at each end of the rink high up between the goal lights to help bring them good luck. And it worked! The team finished the round robin with 4 wins (vs. USA, Taipei, Beijing, Hong Kong) and 1 loss (vs. Russia), making it to the semi-finals where they lost a close game to the top local Beijing team. But they didn’t stop there – they went on to defeat the Team from Vancouver in the Bronze Medal game to bring home the medals and memories they will cherish forever. In fact they developed a bond with the Russian team that ended with both teams trading team hats

at the closing ceremonies – a moment that showed a sport can bring countries together! Families were able to take in all the sights and sounds that Beijing had to offer including stops at the Great Wall of China, Olympic Park, Summer Palace, Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. They made their country proud, raising the Canadian Flag at the Closing Ceremonies on August 1, 2017 – where NHL star Anton Stralman of the Tampa Bay Lightning handed them their medals. Plans are already in the works for another international tournament next year!!!

“STOP STRESSING OVER YOUR NECK PAIN!” The neck can be a hidden and debilitating source of headaches. Very often neck pain and headaches go hand-in-hand, leading to a miserable time coping with everyday activities. According to the National Institute of Health Statistics neck pain and headaches are the second most common form of pain experienced by Americans, with 59% reporting it affected their enjoyment of life. Some headaches are often grouped under the term “cervicogenic headache” meaning that the primary source is from the neck.

There are well mapped out patterns of headaches that come from the different parts of the neck, shoulder and upper back areas. The discs betweenyourbones (vertebrae)and joints in theupperneckoftencontribute to headaches. Even headaches located in the forehead or behind the eyes are often referred pains stemming from problem areas in the neck and base of the skull. The joints connecting the top three vertebral levels of the neck handle almost 50% of the total motion of the entire neck. This means they absorb a lot of repetitive strain. These joints bear the main load of the weight of the head (about that of a bowling ball). With fatigue, poor posture, injuries, disc problems, arthritis, muscular stress and even prior surgeries, the wear and tearon thiscritical regionofyourbodycanprove toomuch, resulting inpain. It is also possible that you may develop a narrowing of the spinal canal itself. Since the spinal cord runs through the spine, a narrowing of the canal or where the nerves exit, can lead to a condition called spinal stenosis. DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Knead dough to work out any bubbles. Set in a pan greased lightly with olive oil, and press in minced garlic. Lay down a base layer of onion flakes, Parmesan, and oregano. Top with tomatoes and mozzarella (neither has to cover every square inch. Just make sure there’s enough for a few tastes in every slice). Scatter basil on top. Bake 15 to 20 minutes, until bottom starts to turn a golden brown.

Top Four Ways To Relieve Headaches Without PainMedication

Dear Valued Client, Here are some tips to relieve nagging headaches without the use of pain medication: 1. Maintain proper posture! Maintaining a slouched posture for prolonged periods of time will cause certain neck muscles to become overworked and others to weaken. The overworked muscles can cause neck pain, tension, and headaches. If left not treated, it can lead to chronic neck pain and headaches. 2. Take frequent short breaks while working at your desk. Standing up from your chair, roll your shoulders back, and re-set your posture. When you are sitting at a desk or a computer for long periods of time and are engaged in your work, you forget to maintain your posture. This causes the neck tension to build and the headaches to start. Stretch your neck throughout the day. Repeat every few hours and hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds. 3. Give yourself some treatment. Apply a deep tolerable pressure to the small muscles below the base of your skull and your temples for 5 minutes. The pressure works to break up tension within the muscle which causes tension headaches.

4. A good night’s sleep with proper positioning and a supportive pillow. Ensure that your neck isn’t twisted to one side or tucked into your chest, you want to keep your neck in a neutral position. Relieve Pain In 60 Seconds Try these simple at home exercises to relieve your pain.

SCAPULAR RETRACTION Scapular retraction is an integral component of good trunk posture. If your scapular retractors are weak, your shoulders will hunch forward and add strain to your thoracic spine. Completing simple scapular retraction exercises can strengthen your muscles and improve your posture. These retractors are responsible for squeezing your shoulder blades together and pulling your shoulders back into upright positioning. How it’s done: Stand tall, shoulders relaxed. Pull shoulder blades back and down. Don’t hunch your shoulders. Repeat 5 times. CERVICAL RETRACTION Cervical retraction may comprise part of your home exercise program if you have spinal arthritis, or you need to strengthen your neck muscles. It is also good for stretching or loosening the muscles at the back of your neck. If you have a neck condition, or pain or other symptoms going down your arm (radiculopathy) or you’re just unsure of what you should do - or how you should do it - please ask one of our physiotherapists for direction before trying the following. How it’s done: Stand with your back against a wall. Position a rolled up towel behind your neck. Tuck chin like you are nodding ‘yes’. Draw your chin closer to the back of your throat. Repeat 3 times.
