L e s s o n Story: At the time when Gideon r u l e d the children of Israel, they were in great trouble. Their ene mies, the Midianites, had fought and con quered them. This h a d happened be cause the Israelites had forgotten God. They had begun to

worship idols. They needed a new leader who would lead them back to God and then with God’s help they could conquer their enemies. Such a leader was Gideon. First he tore down the heathen altars that his people had set up. The people were angry, but when they saw that the heathen god Baal did not punish Gideon for tear ing down his altar, they, too, were silent. ' Then Gideon gathered together his men for battle. God showed Gideon that he was to choose only a few o f the soldiers, the ones who could do just as they were told, and who could act most quickly. He chose three hundred men. This seemed very few soldiers com pared with the thousands of Midianites against whom they were going to fight. And Gideon had prepared them with strange weapons, too. But they were the weapons which God had told him to use. In his right hand, each soldier carried a trumpet, in his left, a pitcher covering a lamp. They' were to do with these j ust as they were told. Gideon marched with them around the walls o f the city. Within the city were the Midianites. At a signal from Gideon, all o f his men blew on their trumpets and shouted, “ The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.” Then they broke their pitchers with a great crash, and all of the lights shone forth. The Midianites heard the noise and the shouting and saw the lights. They thought a great host had come to fight against them and they fled. And that is how Gideon brought his people back to God and freed them from their enemies. A Spiritual Feast A spiritual feast is in store for World’s Fair visitors in Chicago this year.
