The Alleynian 702 2014

Nathalie Murly - Gotto Although at Dulwich for only a year, Tilly certainly packed a lot in. Firstly, there was the transmogrification from Ms Nathalie Gardener to Mrs Murly-Gotto. Then there was her inspirational and ambitious Lower School Reading Scheme, ‘Round the World in 60 Reads’, which excited even the most reluctant readers in Years Seven and Eight. She was also involved in the Isle of Sheppey initiative, a project that she found exciting and very rewarding, and which perhaps contributed to her decision to return to the maintained sector when she took up her new role at Archbishop Tenison’s in Kennington. A charismatic and innovative teacher, Tilly was also a wonderful colleague and generous friend to a number of us in the English Department and although we understood her reasons for leaving, we bade her farewell with a heavy heart.

Lucy Spence

RICHARD SUTTON It was in January 2012 that Lucy joined the English Department, finding herself in that customarily unenviable position of taking over established classes mid-year, and at just the point when the demands of assessment and teacherly judgement were at their nastiest. Lucy, undaunted by the not insignificant workload and a lengthy commute, made an excellent start and quickly established herself as a conscientious, sensitive and perceptive colleague. During her time at Dulwich, she demonstrated a genuine commitment to the different needs of her classes, and to her Lower School form, while also seeking to promote the subject in which she possesses such keen intelligence by helping to run the Middle School Shakespeare Club in its inaugural year. In June 2012 she co-directed the well-received Founder’s Day play, Fiddle & Squeeze , by Judith French, herself a former member of the department. She leaves to take up a new role at Ibstock Place School in Roehampton, for which we wish her the very best in the next stage of her career. David Clifford joined the Mathematics Department in September 2012 on a one-year maternity cover. As he often told groups, this was his return to Dulwich after 40 years, his last visit being as a player in a losing Rugby team from Tonbridge School in 1970. David’s background in management and finance quickly showed, with careful planning for lessons that were always delivered with enthusiasm for the subject and a desire to get to the core of students’ misunderstandings. He also involved himself on the Football field, enthusiastically helping with and supporting the U14 Ds during the Lent term. David left for a job at Bromley High School for Girls and we wish him all the very best for his future teaching career.
