The Alleynian 702 2014

The Alleynian 702 Cover

T he images on the covers of this issue of The Alleynian were taken by Year 11 boys from Drake and Sidney as part of the Middle School House Photography Competition. The front cover is a design by Nicholas Wood using a composite of several images of the Barry Buildings; on the back cover the same buildings are reflected in a large puddle. This photograph brought to mind the famous painting reproduced above: one of the iconic images of

Dulwich, this is the painting of the New College which Pissarro painted in 1871, a year after the opening of the Barry Buildings. It is presently in the collection of the Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse. The Master is working to secure its return to Dulwich for 2019, so it can feature as part of our 400th anniversary celebrations. It is hoped it will appear in a small exhibition of Pissarro’s London landscapes at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, entitled An Impressionist in London .
