‘An Unforgettable Trip’

Dulwich pupils share some of their highlights from a small selection of the many adventures abroad in 2013-14.

China, Spring 2014 Henry Williams (Year 9)

Berlin, Spring 2014 Ben Higlett (Year 12)

Our trip to the western edges of the city took us to the 1936 Olympic Stadium, now home to Bundesliga team Hertha Berlin. Everyone was blown away by the sheer size and grandeur of the stadium and its important past. With what was left of the morning, we wandered down Berlin’s equivalent of the Champs-Élysées, the Kurfürstendamm, where Mr Read talked about the modernised Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, badly bombed during the Second World War. After lessons, we visited Potsdamer Platz and the haunting Holocaust Memorial, and following some free time the Reichstag. We were lucky enough to be able to go inside this historical building, and enjoy the stunning view from its dome, just as dusk fell on Berlin.

We took an overnight train to Xi’an so we could visit the Wild Goose Pagoda and see the terracotta warriors. After a morning spent cycling around the wall surrounding the city, we went to see the terracotta warriors. It was truly awe inspiring to see them in person: they were created around 210 BC and all but one was destroyed. They have been put back together and there are still hundreds of them. Later in the trip we had original Biang Biang noodles, which were very nice. This dish has one of the most complex Chinese characters (with 53 strokes), so I’m glad we only had to eat it, not write it. Another highlight was our visit to DC Beijing, which is not as big as DC but it is modern and well-equipped. They have a massive theatre (bigger than the Great Hall) where some pupils demonstrated their musical skills. One even ‘mixed some tunes’ which confused some of our teachers, but we all liked it. Afterwards, some DC Beijing pupils put on a Kung Fu show, which we participated in. All in all, the China trip was a great success. I can’t wait to go back.
