ments. But will you give Him the right of way ?—Sunday School Times. II. P racticing W hat H e P reached Many years ago when Dr. Meyer was addressing a conference in England, he spied in the audience Dr. and Mrs. Hand- ley C. G. Moule. The former was detained in conversation at the close of the meeting, and Dr. Meyer, as he walked out with Mrs. Moule, remarked to her, “We have all reason to be deeply grateful to your husband for his books.” The reply was a beautiful tribute from a wife to her husband: “I have seen every one of those books lived.” ■ —Christian Herald. III. His G reat D iscovery It is related of the great Scotch surgeon, Sir James Simpson, that he was once ap proached by a young man who wished to compliment him by asking what he regarded his greatest discovery, and the simple reply of this eminent scientist was, “My greatest discovery is that I am a great sinner and that Jesus is a great Saviour.” . —A quilla W ebb . As each New Year comes around, many individuals make high resolves to make each week count for something during the year. The words of our Lord in our Scripture text provide a foundation upon which righteous living, the secret of mak ing the weeks count, can be built. A very high standard of Christian life is set forth in this passage, a standard that is unattain able except through the power of a living Christ. These words of the Lord were not spoken in a conditional mood, nor were they meant to be an intreaty; He pro claims them as strong imperatives. “Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you . . . Give to every man that asketh of thee . . . Be ye therefore merciful. . . Judge not.” It is no wonder that this teaching of our Saviour has been called “the Himalaya of the moral ideal, reaching into the very heavens with its dazzling snow-white crown!” But one exclaims, “How can we love our enemies? Impossible!” Yes, humanly speaking, it is an impossibility to obey these unnatural precepts consistently, and to love the unlovely. To meet this weak ness, the power of God was manifested through the Lord Jesus Christ who trans forms us and enables us to be “more than conquerors through him that loved us.” Because of His love for us, unmerited on our part, we are constrained to love those about us for whom Christ died. Christ gives no command without giving commen surate strength to obey that command. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new crea ture. This new creature has received the Holy Spirit who, when allowed full sway, empowers the Christian to live in a way glorifying to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ has given each Christian, by virtue of His precepts and power, the JANUARY 16, 1938 PLANNING TO MAKE EACH WEEK COUNT L uke 6:27-31, 35-38 Meditation on the Lesson
