Cumberland councillor pushes for waterline upgrade vision@eap.on.ca Cumberland infrastructure to seriously decay.”

Barrhaven. Coun. Blais pressed for a review of the Orléans water line and the study showed that parts of the pipeline are decaying faster than expected andwill soon need replacing. The new water plan for the City of Ottawa includes fixing these pipeline sections and also building a secondary water transmis- sion line to Orléans to provide enough

backup support for the area water supply in case of future main line breaks. “As a fiscally responsible councillor, I’m not happy that so much of this burden is being placed on taxpayers now rather than being spread over the past 20 years,” stated Blais. “I believe today’s action is necessary to help ensure this core service is protected for Orléans residents.”

Last year the main water line to Barrhaven broke down, resulting in a summer water ban that affected tens of thousands of residents in the Barrhaven and Riverside South sectors of the Ottawa region. Last summer folks in Barrhaven and Riverside South had to turn their sprinklers off a lot of the time because of an outdoor water ban. Cumberland ward’s councillor wants to make sure that doesn’t happen in the Orléans area. “Water is a core service that is used to maintain our lawns, flowers and pools during the summertime,” stated Coun. The Ottawa Fire Services would like to hear from anyone in the Cumberland ward or any other rural area of Ottawa who has an old vehicle sitting in their driveway or back field. Any old junker or clunker that they don’t want, the Ottawa fire department will be happy to take it off their hands. The department has a Vehicle Donation Program that accepts donations of used cars and trucks and other motor vehicles. These scrap cars and trucks are used as practice objects for firefighter trainingwith their Jaws of Life equipment for vehicle rescue situations or training in handling vehicle fires. Technological improvements in automotive design for safety features like air bags, alternate fuel and hybrid vehicle systems, and such have made vehicle extrication more challenging and difficult too. Firefighters need to be able to practise and test their skills against a wide variety of vehicles. Most of the vehicles used in the training program come from scrap dealers, which can add to the fire department’s overall annual expense budget. The Vehicle Do- nation Program helps reduce that part of the budget but not without donations of vehicles. Ottawa Fire Services will arrange for free collection of a used vehicle donated to the program. The donor will receive in return a $500 value tax receipt to put towards next year’s charitable income tax deduction. Anyone with an old vehicle for the program can call 613-580-2424, extension 29492 to get information on how to donate. The donor must be present to sign over vehicle ownership and provide suitable photo i.d. Enjoy a fun-filled Family Day long weekend on Feb. 20
