More Than a Workplace Celebrating the Families of Elite PT

We are blessed with great employees at our clinic, who also have wonderful families. We think that’s part of what makes them great team members at Elite PT. They bring their family values and respect for others to the workplace, and they treat patients with the same level of concern they would offer their own family. Our Elite families span generations, and we want to give a special shoutout to these folks of all ages, and of course, to the great mothers and grandmothers we celebrate on May 13th. Our 18 employees have a combined total of 44 children and grandkids, ranging in age from six weeks old (Jayme gave birth to baby Wesley on March 16!) to 38 years old. Out of that total, 30 of the kids are 13 and younger. Heck, nine of them are three and under!

fun as a group, playing games, swimming, eating, drinking, and laughing a lot! We’re excited this year for the additions of baby Wesley and Abby’s baby boy, James. It often feels like we’re one big family. We’re truly blessed to have such a strong sense of community here. It’s easy to see that in addition to nurturing and caring for our patients, our staff members also nurture and care for their little ones. They devote their time at work to our patients and their time at home to their families. Family is something we value at Elite PT as a company, and we’re proud to have employees who value it, too. We appreciate the dedication of our staff members who are also mothers, and we use this time to honor them. Elite PT mothers and grandmothers, we are so grateful for everything you do, and we’re glad there’s a day to celebrate you!

They say it takes a village, and as a close-knit workplace, we love when family members stop by the office for various reasons and we get to say hello and maybe share a hug. We cheer for one another’s kids at soccer games and on the baseball field. We celebrate when they

accomplish something special at school or in other aspects of their lives.

Happy Mother’s Day,

–Bart Jones & Don Cassano

We look forward to getting together with the kids and families, like we do at our summer party. We spend a day at the lake and have

Are You Wasting Water, Time, and Money? Hand-Washing vs. Dishwasher

We’ve all walked into our kitchens, looked at the dishes stacked high in the sink, and asked, “Is it better to throw those in the dishwasher or wash them by hand?” The dishwasher would certainly save you some time, but many people believe that washing dishes by hand uses less water and electricity. In reality, however, washing your dishes by hand is one of the worst things you can do for both the planet and your wallet. Dishwashers use less water than washing by hand. A study conducted in Europe found that individuals who wash dishes by hand tend to use 27 gallons of water to clean just 12 place settings. Meanwhile, modern dishwashers only use 6 gallons of water, and Energy Star appliances use as little as 4 gallons during their wash cycle. The Environmental Protection Agency determined

that using a dishwasher instead of washing by hand can save 5,000 gallons of water and $40 in utility costs a year. It’s not just about water! Unless you have incredibly thick dishwashing gloves, you can’t properly clean your dishes by hand. Dishwashers heat water to around 145 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure your dishes are disinfected. Even if the water from your sink could get that hot, you wouldn’t want to stick your hand in it. Which brings us to the science experiment that is your kitchen sponge. Dr. Philip Tierno, a clinical professor in the microbiology and pathology departments at NYU Langone, determined that your kitchen sponge is the single dirtiest item in your house. Soap and water aren’t enough to

sanitize your sponge, which is left damp next to your sink after each use. Have you ever noticed that stagnant sponge smell? That’s bacteria growing. And when you wash your dishes by hand, you rub that bacteria all over your plates and silverware. Yum. If you have just a single plate or cup, you obviously don’t want to run them through the dishwasher alone; that would be incredibly wasteful. But the drawbacks of washing by hand are too great to ignore. The best option is to wait until your dishwasher is full, then start up the washing cycle. All your dishes will be clean and disinfected, and you’ll use less water in the process.

The Benefits of Early PT Treatment

for Treating Lower Back Pain

What can be done for back pain? Costs associated with treating lower back issues are on the rise. We want to know exactly what is wrong, but sometimes that leads to expensive testing, which is often unnecessary and doesn’t always change the outcome for back pain. Early physical therapy can often be an effective and cost-efficient solution. A recent study in the journal Spine investigated whether early physical therapy had any effects on these outcomes. The study included 220 patients seen by their primary care provider. Patients were from 18–60 years old, had been experiencing lower back pain for less than 16 days, and had no radiating pain below the knees. Half of the patients in the study were given “early” physical therapy, which included one visit with a physical therapist per week for four weeks. The other half of participants were encouraged to remain physically active, but were not offered PT.

The study observed these patients after four weeks, three months, and one year. The group who underwent early physical therapy experienced statistically better quality of life measures and had less lower back pain and disability. The early PT treatment was found to be more cost effective, as well. This is only one study, but the results are significant enough that more research is being pursued to gain additional insight on the subject, including information about which approach works best. The takeaway from this study? Early physical therapy can be a helpful option for treating recent onset back pain. If you’re experiencing back pain, especially pain that began within the last two weeks, you might benefit from early PT treatment, both for a higher quality of life and a lower cost.

As many of us know all too well, lower back pain is a common problem. It keeps people from doing their jobs, playing with their kids, and sometimes, even performing simple daily tasks.

Get Your Grill On 2 May Holidays, 2 Reasons to Grill

The Mediterranean Burger Take your patty to the next level with a Mediterranean twist. Mix feta cheese and garlic into your ground beef before forming your patties. Serve it on a grilled ciabatta bun topped with marinated red peppers and arugula for flavor and texture. If you want to get extra fancy, pour a bit of balsamic reduction over the patty before adding the toppings. The Portobello Burger For a delicious veggie burger even meat eaters will love, use a portobello mushroom as your patty. Remove the stems, then marinate the mushrooms for 15 minutes in a mixture of 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 3 tablespoons olive oil, and a clove of minced garlic. Season

Is there anything more American than grilling a burger outside on Memorial Day? This year, there’s another reason to fire up the grill that weekend: In addition to being Memorial Day, May 28 is also National Hamburger Day! Enjoy this delicious coincidence by heating up the grill, gathering the fixings, and making one of these tasty burgers at home. The Classic Burger Nothing beats the American classic: a seasoned beef patty, a slice of cheddar cheese, a squirt each of mustard and ketchup, a layer of crunchy lettuce, some thinly sliced onions, and a couple of zesty pickles. For a homemade touch, make the pickles yourself by soaking cucumbers in a brine of vinegar, dill, and salt.

the shrooms with salt and pepper, then place them on the grill just as you would any other burger. Gruyere cheese is the perfect creamy topping, and you can use grilled focaccia bread topped with garlic aioli. As you bask in the late spring weather and the inviting smell of delicious food this Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the Americans who gave their lives so we could enjoy these freedoms, and thank those who served.
