Ceci est le résultat d’une étroite col- laboration entre les élèves, les employés du CEPEO et les communautés scolaires. Le CEPEO s’est engagé à sensibiliser les élèves aux enjeux environnementaux en intégrant cet aspect dans l’enseignement de diverses matières, a expliqué M. Dufour. De plus, le CEPEO est en train d’adapter sa gestion à l’échelle du conseil, de sorte à réduire son empreinte écologique. Cela s’applique autant à la consommation d’eau
ou d’énergie qu’aux choix des fournitures et même des fournisseurs. Chaque décision s’inscrit dans le souci du respect des normes ISO 14001, un sys- tème qui permet notamment de mesurer l’impact des gestes posés et d’adapter les pratiques en conséquence. Le CEPEO annonçait d’ailleurs tout récemment qu’il a obtenu la certification ISO 14001, devenant ainsi le premier con- seil scolaire en Amérique du Nord à recevoir cette certification et le premier au monde à obtenir à la fois la certification ISO 14001 et à offrir le programme ISO 14000 pour ses élèves. Le siège social du CEPEO à Ottawa et trois de ses écoles, dont l’École secondaire publique L’Héritage à Cornwall, l’École élé- mentaire publique De la Rivière Castor à Embrun et l’École élémentaire publique Des Sentiers à Orléans, ont répondu aux at- tentes élevées de la norme ISO 14001 ainsi qu’à celles des vérificateurs externes, à la suite d’une visite de plusieurs jours. CORNWALL | A new Flood Risk Reduction Rebate Program is being established by the City of Cornwall to provide assistance to Cornwall homeowners in flooding-af- fected areas. The details of the new program were pre- sented by staff of the Infrastructure and Municipal Works Department during a pub- lic information session on March 26 at the Benson Centre. The framework for the new program has been approved by Cornwall City Council. It’s expected that applications will begin to be accepted in April or May once the nec- essary municipal bylaw is passed at an up- coming City Council meeting. Homeowners who did not experience flooding in 2010 or 2013 can still apply for the rebate program. However, priority will be given to those that experienced flooding or are in flooding clusters. Subject to the number and value of rebate requests received, other non-flood- ed residents may be considered as well. The City has currently budgeted up to $1.5 million over three years for the rebate program in order to assist as many home- owners as possible. Additional details about the program will be shared through the City website and through local media as they become available. The new rebate program is part of the Cornwall Blueprint, a comprehensive plan to deal with issues such as basement flooding mitigation and environmental, water and infrastructure awareness. It serves to address two key pil- lars of the City of Cornwall’s Strategic Plan: Quality of Life and Efficient Services. The Si Miller arena welcomed the 8th edition of the annual Bishop Cup, amidst cheers and chants from students of both Holy-Trinity and St-Joseph, on April 3. Dedi- cated fans harbored school colors, while they joyfully utilized improvised musical instruments provided by organizers, such as cowbells and horns. The Holy Trinity Fal- cons were on a mission; to erase past losses to the seemingly unstoppable Panthers. Yet, by the end of the evening, the Panthers had themselves the 6th win of the tourna- ment, with an agonizing final score of 8-1. This accomplishment has now allowed the Panthers to acquire a three-game winning streak against the battered Falcons. The tournament, which collects funding for the St-Vincent de Paul’s food bank, has fueled an intense rivalry between the two high schools, all for the greater good of the com- munity.

la Ville de Cornwall et du Conseil des Mo- hawks d’Akwesasne est de devenir proprié- taires des terres du port qui comprennent le site en cause. En vertu du règlement provisoire de la Ville de Cornwall, adopté le 9 décembre 2013, toute utilisation des terres du port de Cornwall à d’autres fins qu’un espace vert serait interdite pendant un an. Le règlement vise à donner au Conseil municipal et au personnel de la ville la possibilité d’étudier la question et en- suite d’envisager l’appel du règlement municipal de restric- tion provisoire à la Commission des affaires municipales de l’Ontario et a fait une de- mande à la Cour supérieure de justice de l’Ontario dans laquelle la société conteste l’autorité de la Ville d’adopter le règlement municipal. En février, la Ville a promulgué divers or- dres de suspendre les travaux qui visaient à prévenir la non-conformité au règlement municipal. Compte tenu que les travaux ont continué malgré ces ordres, la Ville a délivré diverses assignations aux termes de la Loi sur les infractions provinciales qui deman- daient à la cour de faire respecter les ordres. l’adoption d’autres stratégies de zon- age pour la zone en question. Le Code de prévention des incendies de l’Ontario prescrit l’installation d’un détecteur de fumée à chaque étage d’un logement et à proximité des chambres à coucher. Le Service d’incendie de Cornwall a adopté une approche de tolérance zéro pour l’application de ce règlement. Les pompiers de la ville imposeront des amendes s’ils découvrent des détecteurs de fumée qui manquent ou qui ne fonctionnent pas lorsqu’ils se présentent à un endroit dans le cadre d’une intervention. L’amende est fixée à 235 $. « Un détecteur de fumée défectueux ne sauve la vie à personne », indique le chef des pompiers, Richard McCullough. Protégez votre famille. Vérifiez vos détecteurs de fumée.
Les résidents doivent obtenir un permis du Service d’incendie de Cornwall et satisfaire aux conditions exposées dans le règlement sur feux à ciel ouvert pour être autorisés à faire un feu sur leur propriété. Par souci de sécurité de votre famille et de vos voisins, veuillez examiner les règles prescrites par le règlement et les respecter. Toute infraction au règlement peut donner lieu à une amende de 195$ et les récidivistes pourraient être visés par une mesure de recouvrement des coûts totaux au taux de 410 $ l’heure. Les récidivistes risquent aussi la révocation de leur permis de feu à ciel ouvert et des amendes nettement plus sévères en vertu du Code de prévention des incendies de l’Ontario.

It provides an excellent op- portunity for the profession to educate the public about the vital role that lawyers and the judiciary serve in guaranteeing an open, independent and unbiased judicial system. In Ontario, Law Day is a collaborative project organized through the partnership of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) and legal and education organizations and institu- tions including the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN), the Law Society of Upper Canada as well as the Association of French Speaking Jurists of Ontario (AJEFO). Drive disqualified, breach and over 80 Phillip Poirier, 43, of Cornwall, was arrested on March 28 and charged with over 80, driving while disqualified and breach of probation for having consumed alcohol and failing to keep the peace. The man was taken into custody during a traffic stop in the area of Twelfth Street and Pitt Street. He was charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 17. Mischief A 21-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on March 29 and charged with mischief. He was charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 15. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter. Theft under $5,000 Lise Dufresne, 47, and Carmen Tarbell, 49, both of Cornwall, were arrested on March 30 and charged with theft under $5000. Dufresne was also charged with breaching her probation order for failing to keep the peace. Lise Dufresne was later released to appear in court on May 1 and Carmen Tarbell was released to appear in court on May 6. Assault, assault with a weapon A 22-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on March 31 and charged with as- sault and assault with a weapon. Warrant Bruce Taylor, 39, of Cornwall, was arrested on April 1 on the strength of a warrant. Drug warrant Cory Brisson, 33, and Chelsy Hart, 24, both of Cornwall, were arrested on April 1 and charged with several drug-related charges as well as weapon charges. It is alleged that on April 1, members of the Cornwall Street Crime Unit executed a war- rant at a Seymour Street address and during their investigation, found drugs total- ling a street value of some $2,000. Hart was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of percocet, possession of marihuana, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession of prop- erty obtained by crime as well as possession of a weapon. She was later released to appear in court on May 15. Brisson was charged with possession of cocaine, posses- sion of percocet, possession of marihuana, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a weapon, breach of probation and breach of a prohibition order. He was held in custody for a bail hearing. Threats A 28-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on April 2 and charged with threats to life. It is alleged that during the month of March the woman threatened to shoot her ex-boyfriend and his girlfriend. Her name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter. Fraud Samantha McCormick, 18, of Maxville, was arrested on April 2 and charged with two counts of fraud under $5000 and unauthorized use of a credit card. She was charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on May 15. Theft under $5,000, mischief, fraud, attempt fraud Peter Laxton, 36, of Cornwall, was arrested on April 3 and charged with five counts of mischief under $5000, two counts of theft under $5000, fraud under $5000, at- tempt of fraud and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.
Breach A 19-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on March 28 and charged with breach of recognizance for having communicated with someone he is not allowed to and for having failed to keep the peace. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in a previous domestic incident. Bonnie Thompson, 42, of Cornwall, was arrested on April 1 and charged with five counts of breach of undertaking for being at a store that she is prohibited going to and failing to keep the peace. She was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. Jeffrey Goulet, 47, of Cornwall, was arrested on April 3 and charged with failing to appear for prints. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 22. Adam Albers, 26, of Cornwall, was arrested on April 3 and charged with breaching an undertaking for having consumed alcohol and failing to keep the peace. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and transported to police headquarters where he was held for a bail hearing. Theft under, breach Bonnie Thompson, 42, of Cornwall, was arrested on March 28 and charged with theft under $5000 and breach of two undertakings for having failed to keep the peace. Police assumed custody of the woman, charged her accordingly and later released her to appear in court on May 1.

Overcoming cancer and celebrating life
With the arrival of April we also welcome daffodils and the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual awareness campaign. It is always inspiring to see these springtime symbols of renewal and hope. The volunteers at the Canadian Cancer Society are hard at work in their communi- ties and across Canada, knocking on doors, organizing special events, and offering their legendary yellow daffodils in the form of pins or in all their fresh, natural beauty. Donations collected during Daffodil Month are used to fund cancer research, public information programs, and services related to the prevention of cancer. This money is
also used to advocate for survivors and sup- port people living with cancer, as well as their families and caregivers. Would you like to make a donation to the Society? During April, when the campaign is in full swing, you can purchase beauti- ful daffodils or a pin to wear in your lapel to show your solidarity for this cause. You can also donate via the Society’s website at www.cancer.ca. Would you like to actively participate in the campaign? DIRECTIONS: To make cake : Preheat oven to 160 ºC (325 ºF). Grease a deep 20 cm (8-inch) round cake pan, line bottom with paper and grease again. Pat maraschino cherries dry. Combine flour, ground almonds, bak- ing powder and salt. Add cherries and toss until pieces are well coated; reserve. Beat butter, almond extract and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in dry ingredi- ents and cherry mixture in 3 additions, alternately with sour cream. Spread into prepared pan. Bake 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 hours, or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes. Turn cake out and cool com- pletely. Serve with custard sauce. To make custard sauce : Heat milk and cream, without boiling. Beat egg yolks with sugar; stir in milk gradu- ally. In a saucepan, cook over medium heat without boiling until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract. Serve cold.
