Zone 4 – Atmospheric Zone — Although this area remains above the waterline, airborne chlorides gradually accumulate on the concrete surface. Over time, chlorides penetrate the con- crete, eventually reaching the reinfor- cing steel and initiating corrosion. Investing in longer service life Corrosion cannot be eliminated— but it can be effectively controlled. Understanding how corrosion develops and selecting a cathodic pro- tection system tailored to the struc- ture’s specific environment allows owners to dramatically extend service life, reduce maintenance costs, and protect critical marine infrastructure for decades to come.
