Beta Omicron and North Central Province Have a Good Year

Brothers all, My name is George T. Akpan Jr., and I am a Spring 2016 initiate of the Uni- versity of Wisconsin-Madison chapter, the Beta Omicron of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. I am a 23 year old, graduating senior from Milwaukee, WI, receiving my Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering in May 2019. I currently serve as the North Central Junior Province Vice Polemarch and Co- Chair of the Council of Junior Province Vice Polemarchs. Since my initiation, I have been highly motivated to utilize my leadership capacity and talents to serve as an undergraduate leader in our fraternity. Therefore, I am excited to make use of my office by supporting the empower- ment of our undergraduates as well as fostering spaces and opportunities for our chapters to grow. I have a strong belief that leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. It is an action, and not a position. There are average leaders who only raise the bar on themselves. There are also good leaders, who raise the bar for others. But great leaders inspire others to raise their own bar. My experience in Kappa has provided me with ample opportunities to interact with brothers who have significantly im- pacted my growth and development as a

man and leader. These experiences have reminded that without continual growth and progress, such words as improve- ment, achievement and success have no meaning. As undergraduate leaders, our aims must always be to exceed the ef- forts of the men who have come before us. Having an established reputation is fine, but you must continue to justify it as the work only becomes harder and the expectation must never be lowered as we transition into leadership of our chapters, excel in the classroom, and serve our communities. Inky Johnson once said, “Commitment is staying true to what you said you would do long after the mood you said it in has left.” In closing, whether I am with my BrOthers on the yard, visiting chapters across my Province or celebrating the achievements of my fellow ULI Theta Klass brothers, I have found joys in remaining committed to my goals and indulging in my undergraduate experi- ence. With the good ol’ Kappa Spirit in mind, I would like to leave you all with a quote that has resonated with me and provided more meaning to my com- mitments to serve as an undergraduate leader. Brother Oliver W. Parson’s once profoundly stated, “Kappa has no life per se. The only life it has is that which we the Brothers give it.”
