MINING ALASKA'S FUTURE: GIRLS WHO WELD
Fairbanks North Star Borough School District recently hosted its summer Girls Who Weld program at North Pole High School. Students from high schools across the district gained valuable hands-on experience while learning real-world skills, including welding safety, gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding, and torch and plasma cutting. Led by 2026 Alaska Teacher of the Year Pete Daley, the Career & Technical Education (CTE) program introduces students to careers in welding and the skilled trades while helping them build workforce-ready skills. In addition to building custom bicycle racks for the city of North Pole, the girls visited Kinross Alaska for a firsthand look at career opportunities in Alaska's mining industry.
