ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE IN MEDICAL CODING

Upon completion of the Medical Coding Program, the graduate should be able to demonstrate mastery of the Entry-Level Competencies for the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) described in the most recent roles and functions study, as delineated by the profession. These competencies are periodically updated by the Education Strategy Committee of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), based on feedback obtained from the membership through various methods. These competencies serve as the basis for curriculum content and structure in accredited programs. Coding specialists are skilled in classifying medical data from patient records, often in a hospital setting, but also in various other healthcare settings. The CCS credential demonstrates a practitioner's tested skills in data quality and accuracy, as well as mastery of coding proficiency. The CCS certification is a natural progression for professionals experienced in coding inpatient and outpatient records. Coding specialists create coded data used by hospitals and medical providers to obtain reimbursement from insurance companies or government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Researchers and public health officials also use this data to monitor patterns and explore new interventions. The purpose of the Coding Internship is to provide the vital link between textbook, campus instruction, and on-site experience. Students are assigned to a health care facility for 80 hours to gain “real-life” experience throughout the professional curriculum. Affiliate sites are located in Oklahoma City and other locations throughout Oklahoma. Arrangements may be made for students to complete requirements in out-of-state facilities. Students are responsible for all expenses incurred, including meals, transportation, and lodging. In addition, the student should be able to demonstrate current health insurance coverage, a recent physical examination and immunizations, a drug screen, and completion of a background check prior to participating in practical experiences, as well as any additional requirements specified by the healthcare facility.
