Waste Changes
Norfolk’s new waste collection program, featuring new garbage and organic waste carts, starts Monday, September 28, 2026. This new program is designed to help reduce the amount of material sent to Norfolk’s landfill. Nearly half of what is currently placed in garbage bags could be composted through the organic waste program instead. Collection changes Only waste in your new gray garbage cart and green organic waste cart will be collected. Any waste set outside your carts will not be collected. Recycling will use your existing recycling boxes. Please, make sure all your waste is by the road before 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. Bi-weekly collection Your gray garbage cart will be collected every other week. Flip the page for a map showing if your property will be on week 1 or week 2 collection . Weekly collection Your green cart for organic waste and your recycling (using your existing bins) will be collected every week. Tips for using your new carts Practice proper sorting Almost half of what used to go in your garbage bag can now be put in your organic waste cart. Use your cart for food scraps, peels, eggshells, bones, small amounts of oil, and more. You can also use your green organic waste cart for tea bags, paper coffee filters, paper towels and compostable paper plates.
Use your kitchen container, pictured above, to collect food scraps as you make them. Sorting ‘as you go’ makes using your new green organic waste cart much easier. Your kitchen container will be delivered inside your green cart—don’t forget to retrieve it when your carts arrive. Please do not put diapers, pet waste, or yard waste into your green organics cart. Diapers and pet waste still go in your garbage and yard waste is still collected separately. Put your carts out properly Carts must be set out properly to ensure collection by the new automated waste trucks. Proper cart placement helps keep service on schedule and ensures your waste is collected.
Please ensure your carts are facing the street (the wheels should face away from the street) and have 2’ (60cm) of space in between them and other objects.
