Marriage ceremony You can choose from a simple ceremony with a couple of friends as witnesses or you might like a more splendid affair. Whatever your vision, we will help you create the perfect ceremony. For a marriage ceremony, there are words prescribed by law which you must say, these words declare you are free to marry and contract your marriage.
Civil partnership It is not a legal requirement to have a ceremony when you are entering into a civil partnership. You may prefer the informality of signing the legal document with your witnesses or you may wish to celebrate with a ceremony. Whatever you choose, we would be delighted to guide you in creating a day which is special and personal to you both. If you choose to include a ceremony, you may like to say personal vows to each other, exchange rings and include music, poetry or prose. We can provide you with examples or you may wish to create your own. Any personal words or vows cannot be religious or have any connection with a religious ceremony.
Civil partnership conversion to marriage Couples can convert their existing civil partnership to marriage, provided they registered it in England and Wales, or overseas in a consulate or armed forces base where the civil partnership was registered according to the laws of England and Wales. The conversion to a marriage will be registered and marriage certificates will be issued for which there is a charge. You will be asked to choose one set of declaratory words and contracting vows.
You may wish to include personal vows, exchange rings and include music and poetry or prose. Please ensure the Ceremonies Team has seen these words before the day. Any personal words or vows cannot be religious or have any connection with a religious marriage ceremony. At the end the ceremony, the registrar will invite you and your witnesses to sign the legal marriage document. The ceremony can last for up to 30 minutes.
A civil partnership ceremony can last for up to 30 minutes.
