CLAY BRICKS
AUTHENTICITY, HERITAGE AND AN UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO QUALITY ARE VALUES THAT HAVE DEFINED KINGSCOURT BRICK FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY… Clay bricks by Kingscourt
For more than 150 years, Kingscourt Brick has been making clay bricks in Co Cavan, using locally-sourced Keuper Marl clay, together with a depth of craft knowledge passed down through generations of Irish brickmakers. Today, as part of the Breedon Group, that heritage is now being combined with investment in innovation and sustainability, setting new benchmarks for the brick industry. Kingscourt Brick holds a distinction that no other manufacturer can make or replicate. It is the only manufacturer of clay bricks on the island of Ireland. Every other brick specified on a project throughout the 32 counties, whether residential, commercial or civic, is imported, carrying with it the carbon cost of cross-channel logistics, the supply uncertainty of import dependency and the inevitable disconnect from local soil and generational craft and skill. For Northern Ireland in particular, that distinction has taken on added commercial significance in recent years. Post-Brexit trade arrangements have introduced friction and cost uncertainty into goods moving between the UK and Ireland.
For developers, architects and contractors navigating tighter environmental targets, or facing growing scrutiny of embodied carbon in planning assessments and ESG reporting, BioBrick provides a credible, immediately available solution. The initial production run of 150,000 units means early-adopting projects in Northern Ireland can be among the first across the island to deliver homes and buildings with certified low-carbon masonry at their core. The company has also introduced a factory-applied hydrophobic coating system across selected brick lines, delivering a meaningful enhancement to long-term durability and weather resistance for exposed Northern Irish facades. “For contractors and developers managing tight programme timelines, that reliability matters.”
The range reflects the breadth you would expect from a century of brickmaking, with more than 30 product lines spanning smooth dragface and rustic multi-tones through to heritage blends and tumbled varieties, all with technical support available. BioBrick: Ireland’s first certified low-carbon brick May 2026 sees the commercial launch of BioBrick, a genuine landmark for construction. BioBrick is Kingscourt’s next-generation clay facing brick, fired using renewable biomethane rather than conventional natural gas. The result is a brick with up to 70% lower embodied carbon compared with standard production, making it the first certified low-carbon brick manufactured in Ireland. The development is significant precisely because of what it does not require. Biomethane is delivered through the existing gas network infrastructure, which means there are no changes to kiln equipment, disruption to production operations or compromise on the brick’s technical performance. BioBrick meets the same strength and dimensional standards as Kingscourt’s conventional range, carries the same trusted finish and colour consistency, and is fully compatible with existing construction methods and specifications.
Kingscourt Brick, supplied directly across the border, carries none of
that complexity; there are no customs administration, logistics surcharges or lead-time variability driven by port conditions. It is the most straightforward supply chain available in the market and, for contractors and developers managing tight programme timelines, that reliability matters.
