ULSTER UNIVERSITY TEAMS TRIUMPHED AT THE ANNUAL QUIZ HELD IN BELFAST ON MARCH 5, PROGRESSING TO THE NISO/NISG ALL-IRELAND FINALS IN CO CAVAN ON APRIL 18… 2026 NISG Quiz review
Teams from Ulster University (UU) have scooped both the Novice and Previous Entrant categories of the 2026 Northern Ireland Safety Group (NISG) Quiz, held in Belfast on March 5. Second and third places went to, respectively, Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure and Energia Group for Novice, and Lagan MEICA and Hyster Yale for Previous Entrants. UU co-sponsored the event alongside Safety Advice Centre, hosting a full house at its Belfast campus. Following a pub quiz-style format, the event saw 12 teams complete eight rounds of mainly H&S-related content
with a few general knowledge questions thrown in for good measure. Anyone in a full-time H&S role is not eligible to sit on a team, with the quiz aimed at encouraging all employees to take ownership of H&S at work. This year’s event was again tightly contested, with just one point separating the runners up from the third-placed team in the Previous Entrants category. In the Novice category, competition was equally fierce with three teams initially tied for third place. Opening the event, HSENI Deputy Chief Inspector Dr Bryan Monson thanked everyone for attending, wishing them
luck and praised the annual quiz as a valuable opportunity for those outside of H&S roles to build and develop their H&S knowledge and skills. Special thanks go to Alan Burch of the Safety Advice Centre for undertaking the role of quizmaster for a 21st year, and to Alexander Huston and the team from Compass at UU for preparing and serving a delicious hot buffet supper for all contestants and supporters. This year’s chosen charity for the NISG Quiz ballot was MS Society Northern Ireland, with £1,225 raised thanks to ballot prize donations from NISG member organisations.
