15. He Is Pserious “Unto youk therefore which believe he is precious” (1 Pet. 2:7). Unto them which believe, He is pre cious— So precious, that words cannot tell. All the joy, or the peace, and the rap ture When Himself, in the heart comes to dwell. He alone is the true’, perfect answer As We cry for some need in our soul; Be it holiness, faith, or our healing, Jesus Christ surely m a k e t h us whole! For He reigns as a glorified Saviour— Christ triumphant, and c o m i n g again— Christ alive; and still over us yearning ’Til we give Him our final Amen! —Florences. Mott. 16. To Be with Him “Truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:3). I want you to notice why these twelve were appointed. The first reason: ■mentioned for their appoint ment is “that they should be with him.” Why? Because it is the compan ionship of Christ, that is at the heart of all effective Christian service; and unless there is the development of that companionship; and unless there is an. entering in day by day into a close and yet reverent fellowship with JeSus Christ, all our activity, service, and en ergy will be largely in vain. He wants ouf friendship.—A. St. John Thorpe. 17. Christ Is Our Peace “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). - The dominant emotion today is fear, and foreboding: Men see théir pleas ures passing; their liberties curtailed their possessions threatened. B u t Christians áre not meánt to he thus. This is the time for our testimony. Jesus reminds us that this concern over “things” characterizes the “Gen tiles”—unsaved people all about us— “your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things” (Matt. 6:32)v—Norman B. Harrison. 18, - Unlimited Power “Unto him that is able to do exceed ing abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that wofketh in us” (Eph. 3:20). To what a lofty peak He desires to bring us but how often we-continue in our prayer life to grovel around in the foothills of His precious promises and never reach the glorious exhilarating heights. The measure of that power (the Holy Spirit) working in us is de-
forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58). We need patience. Seed must first be planted, then watered, and even then you have to wait for the fruit. “First the biade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.” The increase is as sure as the planting and watering. God is more faithful than Paul or Apollos, and will sifrely perform His part. . . . Satan; however, will bring all possible discouragements to bear on you; but be a Paul or an Apollos, and trust God. This is the privilege of God’s people.— Word and Work. 12. Are You a Christian Soldier? “Put on the whole armor of God . . . for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but' a g a i n s t principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wiekedness in. high places” (Eph. 6:11, 12). It was a great task the Lord allotted to His people, when He gave the Church the commission to go into, all the world and make disciples of all nations. It is in this warfare that God leads. He is the unseen Host of this large army of Christian soldiers. God leads all the way from the place of yielded surrender here to the needy heart in a land dark with pagan fear! Is He calling you to follow? He says, “Lo, I am with you alway”; will you say, “Here am-1; send me”? —-A. M. Mannes. 13. Taking Possession “The land whereon thou liest, to thee will 1 give it” (Gen. 28:13). All the promises of God are Yea and Amen in Christ Jesus; and as He is ours, every promise is ours if we will but lie down upon it in restful faith. Come, weary one, use thy Lord’s words as thy pillows: Lie down in peace. Dream only of Him. Jesus is thy ladder of light. . . Be. sure.that the promise is thy Gód-giveñ portion, and that it will not be. robbery, for thee to take it to thyself, as spoken specially to thee. --Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 14. The Expense of Prayer “Be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer” (1 Pet. 4:7). As we pray for others, if the prayer be sincere, we assume great responsi bility. Rufus quotes Emerson, “The Gulf Stream will flow through a wheat straw, if it be laid parallel to the cur rent.” Prayer lays our lives, resources, contacts and influences parallel to the current of God’s will, and that means adjustment to God in all our relation ships. Parents often pray for their chil dren, and their prayers are answered, provided they are willing to bear the expense of the prayer.— The Pilot.
