ing. Life always precedes breath; life must exist before it can possess the "breath. Joseph Cook says. “ If life precedes organism, why may it not be both independent of organism and survive it? The unborn infant has life, but not air; the oxidized blood of the mother sustains this vitality, through pulsation, with out effort of the infant life, until the birth period, when this life moves the lungs to perform their normal function, in utilizing air as breath in independent action.” “ Ruach” and “ Pneuma” are variously rendered in the Old and New Testament. The following sample words will illustrate “ Ruach” in the Old Testament is rendered. “ Air”__“ No air can come between them,” Job 41:16. “ Anger”— “ Their anger (mar. Spirit) was abated," Judges 8:3. “ Blast”— "Blast of Thy nostrils.” Ex. 15:8. (Figurative for wind) Ex. 14:21. “ Breath”— “ Come, . . . O breath,” Ezek. 37:9. (See verse I 14, “ Holy Spirit” ). * “ Cool”— “ Cool of the day" (marg. “ Wind” ), Gen. 3:8. “ Courage”— “ No more courage,” Josh. 11:11. As 1 Kings 10:5, “ Spirit.” "Mind”__"A fool uttereth all his mind,” Prov. 29:11. "Quarters”— “ Four quarters,” 1 Chron. 9:24. (Literally “ Four Winds” ). “ Side” __“ On a side,” Jer. 52:23. (R .' V. “ outside, namely windward). “ Spirit”— “Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit,” Psa. 129:7. “ Spiritual”— “ Spiritual man,” Hos. 9:7. (Marg. “ Man of ~ the spirit” ). : :--------------------- 7— —-—----------- “ Wind”— “ The wind passeth over it," Psa. 52:16. “ Tempest”— “ An horrible tempest,” Psa. 11; 6. “ Vain”— “ Vain knowledge,” Job 15:2. (Marg. “ knowl edge of wind” ). In the New Testament, “ Pneuma” is translated: “ Life” __“ Life” (to image), viz.: a demoniacal spirit, Rev. 13:16. “ Wind”— “ Wind bloweth,” John 3:8. (Literally “ Spirit goeth where it wills” ). “ Spirituai”— “ Zealous of spiritual” (gifts) (literally “ of spirits” ), 1 Cor. 14:12. “ Ghost”— “ Gave up the ghost," John 19:30. “ Spirit” -*--"In the spirit,” Rom. 2:29. To say that the words for "spirit” mean “ wind” an«J nothing else, is to utter an absurdity. Let us read “ wind” instead of "spirit” in a few sentences of Scripture. “ The Lord Thy God hardened His wind” (DeuL 2:30). "Turnest ' thy wind against God” (Job 15:3). “ In whose wind is no guile” (Psa. 32:2). “ Renew a right wind in me” (Psa. 51:10). “ A faithful wind” (Prov. 16:13). “ A humble wind” (Prov. 16:19-). "The wind of grace and of supplica tion” (Zech. 12:10). How is the word for Spirit used in the New Testament?’ In at least twelve associations we find “ Pneuma” used in the New Testament.

Our Children

By Catherine Booth-Clibborn If you have never bought a book on child training, be sure to get this one; or if you have such books already, don’ t neglect to add this one! Scientific and up-to-date though our much vaunted modern methods of child train ing may be, they do not seem to be producing a better generation o f children. It is because this volume is writ ten by a godly and successful mother of ten children— all living and nearly every one o f them already engaged in the Lord's service— and she a noted soul-winner herself, that this volume deserves such unusual recommendation. The author is one of the gifted daughters of the famous General Booth of the Salvation Army. Better known as “ The Marachale.” The present volume, written modestly and unassumingly, nevertheless shows her to have been successful in bringing up her own children, and with the many illustrations introduced from long experience, her book is sure to be helpful to every sincere Christian parent.
