Hygiene: Is the person able to care for self? When was the last bath, shower, or linen change? Are the linens damp or wet? What are the environmental factors that affect the person’s hygiene? Is oral care being completed? When was the last clothing change? How is the person’s skin integrity? Pain: Is the person in pain? Have the person rate the severity of the pain (0 – 10). What has worked in the past to relieve this pain? Is the pain chronic or acute? Does the person have prescribed pain medications? What else in the person’s environment can be modified to promote comfort (fresh air, water, food, rest)? Sleep: How much sleep has the person had today? What helps assist the person’s rest or relaxation? Are there potential factors in the environment that inhibit sleep (sounds, smells, light)? How has the lack of sleep affected the person’s activities of daily living? Integrating the essential elements of OMEGA-7 in the practical nursing data collection or focused assessment provides the person in their environment the opportunity to “tell their story.” OMEGA-7 is included in all syllabi in the Sumner College Practical Nursing Program. In NUR 101 Nursing Fundamentals I, the essential elements of OMEGA-7 are introduced and this course provides the basis upon which all other nursing courses are built. Throughout the curriculum, the practical nursing student has the opportunity to create an 8th essential element, to provide ownership of their practical nursing approach for caring a person’s health and environment. Items that are unique to the curriculum plan: • One cohort of students is accepted into the program every 10 weeks in this progression program. • The Alternative Therapies course includes health care practices of other cultures; the scientific basis for use of therapies, and information about research and practice guidelines related to complementary therapies. • The elements of nurse Florence Nightingale’s theoretical dimensions and applications are integrated throughout this curriculum (OMEGA-7: Orientation, Medication, Emergency, Gait, Allergies—air, food, water, safety, hygiene, pain, and sleep). An objective is included in each nursing syllabi to identify, demonstrate, integrate, or evaluate OMEGA- 7.

NUR 112, 113 & 114: Practical Application of Pain Management Interventions Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) Testing is utilized as a learning and preparation resource for the NCLEX-PN examination. The preparation process begins in term 3 and ends in term 5. Courses include NCL 130 (3rd term), NCL 140 (4th term) and NCL 150 (5th term). Study materials, homework assignments and practice and proctored assessments are included in these classes. In term 5 a final proctored comprehensive predictor is given within course NCL150. If a 68% score is not obtained the course instructor and department chair of nursing will collaborate in developing a remedial plan. When the student completes the remedial plan, the student is responsible to complete a retake of the proctored comprehensive predictor. A probability score of 68% for passing boards on first attempt must be obtained on this retake to be eligible for course completion. If a 68% is not obtained, the student will be provided with another remedial plan developed by course instructor and department chair. The student will then be allowed to take two more comprehensive predictors. If a 68% probability of passing boards is not obtained on the final attempt the student will not be eligible for program completion. Comprehensive Predictor Exit Requirements For NCLEX-PN
