Transportation to the Clinical Setting Each student is responsible for his/her own transportation to each clinical setting. Please see Travel for Clinical Assignments below. Carpooling is encouraged and at some clinical partner sites, it is necessary and mandatory. Travel for Clinical Assignments Travel to the clinical partner site is the student’s responsibility and may require an hour or more travel time*, depending on the term and topic of study. Depending on the clinical partner and instructor requirements, the students may need to travel to the clinical facility and collect information to complete required clinical documents. If the student is required to review the client’s chart at the clinical facility a clinical instructor must be present. The Student must: 1. Dress appropriately, which includes wearing clean, unwrinkled, business casual clothing, along with wearing your I.D. badge. 2. Notify the charge nurse when you arrive at the facility and when you are leaving the clinical facility. Explain to the charge nurse the reason for your presence and what you will be doing. 3. The student may meet and talk with the assigned client, but shall not perform any nursing care or assist the client in any way. 4. Demonstrate nursing professionalism and ethical behavior while in the clinical partner site. Any unprofessional or unethical behavior will be reviewed by the instructor and/ or Department Chair, Nursing Programs and subject to disciplinary action. 5. Complete all required clinical forms as assigned. 6. Turn in all required clinical forms and assignments when due (to be determined by the clinical instructor). 7. Adhere to both the Nursing Program and the clinical partner policies and procedures. *The clinical experience in the Registered Nursing program may require up to 5 hours travel time from the Portland metro area and necessitate overnight accommodation at the student’s expense. Circumstances may require modification in order that students receive all the training required from the Registered Nursing program, therefore the necessary and reasonable travel for training is not necessarily limited to the above. Meals/Coffee Breaks Every student is permitted to have one 15-minute break and a 30- or 45-minute lunch break during a clinical day, depending on the length of the clinical shift. Students are responsible for the cost of their own meals. The clinical instructor will determine the break times. Students must notify the clinical instructor and facility staff (if applicable) if leaving the facility for breaks or lunch. When returning from break or lunch, the student must
immediately notify the clinical instructor. Smoking
Most health care agencies/institutions have adopted a smoke free environment policy. Students are expected to follow the site policies. If available, students may use the designated smoking areas. Parking All institutions/agencies provide Sumner College with information regarding the availability and location of student parking. It is mandatory to abide by each institution/facility parking regulations. The individual student is responsible for any parking tickets, towing, or infractions received from a clinical/ institutional setting. Injuries at Clinical Facilities Students are required to report injuries to the clinical instructor immediately and follow the agency procedures regarding reporting and documenting of the accident/injury, along with completing a Clinical Incident Report (CIR), and forwarding the CIR to both the involved instructor and Department Chair, Nursing Programs.
