Are there any who have been afraid of what they think will be the cost o f conse cration? You have regarded God as a somewhat harsh despot who will squeeze the uttermost out of you, and you have for gotten the revelation of Him in Jesus Christ who taught us to say, “Our Father.” God's demand for a consecrated life is in order that His best may be at the service of His child . . . Your dream, as was Hannah’s, will be fulfilled far beyond your expecta tions, if you will but consecrate your all to God.—S. S t . J ohn T horpe . JUNE 11 “The Evidence of Things Not Seen” "By faith Noah, being warned o f God o f things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving o f his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir o f the righteousness which is by faith” (Heb. 11:7). On the day when there is going to be an eclipse of the sun, you see everywhere peo ple with smoked glasses gazing up into the sky. Why? Because they have read about the eclipse in the newspapers. They are quite certain that there is going to be an eclipse, because they have read about it. Noah . . . was warned of God, and he prepared an ark for the saving of his house. Would to God that we, too, be lieved the Word of God as we believe the word of man!—H. E arnshaw S mith . While Abraham was yet a pagan and an idolater, God revealed Himself to him. God took the initiative. Abraham’s faith came neither out of the sublimity of his thought, nor from the purity of his life. It was a response to the revelation of the everlast ing God. . . . God, who before evangel ized Abraham, reveals Himself to us when we accept that special revelation which be gins with Abraham and culminates in Christ. The promised Holy Spirit accom panies the hearing of this faith, making us certain that we are blessed with Abraham in the covenant of grace. —W illiam C. R obinson . JUNE 12 Abraham’s Faith "The God o f glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in M esopo tamia, before he dwelt in Charran" (Acts 7:2 ). "Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith, be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour” (Matt. 15:28). This woman got the unprecedented thing because her need was so great, and there was no other way of meeting it. And our Lord Jesus encourages us in that, for He says, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you”—generated for you. . . . What illimitable power He puts unto the hands of those who abide in Him! Oh, men and women, let our faith rise, let our hope become strong. W e have a wonderful God to deal with. —W . Y. F ullerton . JUNE 13 Illimitable Power
read that novel which I know in my inner most heart is not according to the mind and will of God, with the eyes that are included in that same hallowing, separating and cleansing touch? What are you and I read ing? What are we indulging in? Don’t you see how the doctrine of redemption by blood, which means death, searches the in ner life?—W . H. F inney . JUNE 7 Robbed? "Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweih it not” (Hosea 7:9 ). I question whether there can be a more tragic situation in life than to be robbed of our power and not to be aware of it. And yet there are, I believe, thousands of pro fessing Christians who have been robbed of their power and they are not conscious of its loss. One of the saddest stories we have in Scripture is that of Samson, that man who was filled with God’s Spirit, but to whom there came a day when it was said of him, “He wist not that the Lord had departed from him."—W . H. A ldis . Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty, Hold me with Thy powerful hand. —W illiam W illiams . Here is a man infilled with the Spirit of God, bom again through receiving the Lord Jesus Christ; and yet he is doing things he does not want to do . . . Indeed, it seems as if there were two men dwelling in every heart, the one wanting to do the things that are pleasing to God, and the other wanting to please himself. The old nature and the new continually struggling . . . but, thank God, as you abide in Christ, and as He abides in you, your very tendencies can be transformed, and you yourself set free to serve Him in newness of life.—J. R ussell H owden . J une 9 To Know Christ “That l may know him, and the pow er o[ his resurrection” (Phil. 3:10). W e can possess much information con cerning Jesus, yet not know Him. It is a matter of having practical experience of the preciousness and value of the Saviour for our life. That knowledge can and must be gained every day. It is our privilege to drink from the fountain of life and to com mune with Him who perfectly satisfies the need of the human heart. W e shall then learn the value of His saving power and love. The Lord will become more dear to us when we, by experience, know Him to be the source of peace, comfort, and joy In every circumstance of life.—H. B a k er . JUNE 10 Consecration "For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me. my petition . . . Therefore also 1 have lent him to the Lord" (1 Sam. 1:27, 28). JUNE 8 Two Natures "For that which I do, I allow not: or what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I" (Rom. 7:15).
