Communicable Diseases An awareness of how serious communicable diseases are spread provides guidelines to minimize the risk of contact and/or infection. Hand washing, socially responsible activities, combined with “universal precautions” must be observed at all times. Quite simply “universal precautions” means placing a barrier between yourself and body fluids or wastes such as blood, drool, urine, stool, or discharge from eyes, nose, or open wounds. You must also understand the limitations of the barrier used and choose safe activities that will not defeat the barrier (for example, rubber or plastic disposable gloves will not provide a barrier if punctured or cut with a sharp or pointed object in the process of cleaning). Precautionary information regarding communicable diseases follows: Personal Hygiene-Hand Washing The most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of illness is to wash your hands thoroughly and often.  Rub your hands together vigorously for at least 20 seconds using warm running water and soap.
