Student-Community Service as the Third Role of Higher Education Institutions for Social Innovation in the USA, Belgium, China and Germany Thurs. 9:30 - 9:50am EDT In terms of public administration study programs student-community service could constitute an essential key and a crucial third pillar for higher education institutions. The intercontinental panel aims to address what developments are taking place, what is still missing to establish this concept, based on public debate and gives university / program examples. Higher education institutions in Continental Europe often still seem to struggle with the integration of community servicing in their missions. In China, it requires more specific attention to cultivate this spirit in study programs. In the US, the present generation of students has a real zest for social innovations which leads to supplement study programs. Bridges to Somewhere:
Getting to the Root: Teaching Through a Social Justice Lens Thurs. 2:45 – 3:05pm EDT There is growing recognition of the imperative to ground public affairs education in social justice. However, this recognition is often followed by a sense of overwhelm. The common question emerges: How do we integrate a social justice perspective, attend to issues of social inequities perpetrated by status quo approaches to public administration and public policy, and maintain a rigorous focus on substantive content of given course? Each presenter will explore the ways in which they have gone about addressing these questions in their own courses. Vanessa Lopez-Littleton, California State University- Monterey Bay convener
Launching and Sustaining Undergraduate Programs in Professional Policy Schools Thurs. 2:45 – 3:05pm EDT Policy Schools across the country are considering new undergraduate programs. Most are met with challenges from both within their Schools and Universities. From designing the curriculum, to writing the proposal, to implementation, there are a variety of challenges along the way. Once implemented, there is the challenge of sustaining these programs to allow them to grow to meet the needs of undergraduates who will soon enter the Civic Square and make significant contributions to public policy. In this interactive panel, representatives from three NASPAA schools will share experiences building, administering and sustaining undergraduate programs. Robert Bifulco, Syracuse University convener Nina Harris, University of Maryland, College Park Austin Zwick, Syracuse University Ron Zimmer, University of Kentucky Cathy Y. Liu, Georgia State University
Leveraging Higher Education Assets to Close Divides Thurs. 2:45 – 3:05pm EDT Polarization along ideological and geographic lines, especially between rural and non-rural voters, is a prime contributor to political dysfunction, not just in the U.S., but globally. Witness Brexit, quickly followed by the Trump election, both fueled by growing division between city and country. Place has become personal and we don't understand or trust each other, sometimes for no reason other than where we choose to live. What can higher education institutions, policy schools in particular, do to close these divides? What processes, programs, and training can we provide to address this crisis in the civic square? This panel will highlight best practices and challenge all of us to innovate towards collaboration. Paul Brown, University of Maryland, College Park convener Chris Page, University of Washington/Washington State University – Ruckelshaus Center Kristen Wright, Portland State University Palma Strand, Creighton University Terry Amsler, Indiana University, Bloomington
