Africa in Search of Civic-Centered Public Affairs Education: The Promise and Chal lenge of the MPA/MPP Curriculum Fri. 3:30 – 3:50pm EDT Will Africa continue with business as usual or will it pursue a different route by training civically and ethically engaged professionals capable of prioritizing people, planet, peace, partnership, and prosperity? We address this question by analyzing MPA/MPP curricula in African universities to expose gaps in public service education and training. We find that there is ample room to embed ethics and civic-centered courses that will equip professionals with non- traditional skills and abilities needed to promote civic engagement and effective ethics management. We conclude by reflecting on the implications of a model for public service education in the context of development management based on publicness and relationship building through dialogue, deliberation, and inclusion. Engagement 360: Making Experiential Education More Than a Few Lines on the Resume Fri. 3:30 – 3:50pm EDT In Public Affairs education, we encourage students to gain professional experience through internships and experiential education, but how can we be sure they have meaningful experiences and grow personally and professionally? In this panel, representatives from four NASPAA schools will discuss structured internship or experiential education programs for graduate and undergraduate students, including how to adapt these models to the virtual environment in response to COVID-19. These opportunities provide mentorship, programming, facilitated reflection, and post-program engagement to ensure student internship experiences equip themwith civic engagement skills and professional acumen necessary to search for and be successful after graduation. Mitigating the Inequities in NASPAA Schools’ Responses to COVID-19 Fri. 3:30 – 3:50pm EDT According to recent public forums such as the ASPA/Wilder School’s COVID-19, Public Affairs Education and the 2020-2021 Academic year, and the Chronicle of Higher Educations NASPAA Schools responses to this crisis can have dysfunctional consequences to members of the School’s community such as students-alumni-staff and faculty. Policy Analysis: It’s Not Magic, It’s Science Fri. 3:30 – 3:50pm EDT Artificial intelligence and machine learning are becoming more prevalent in the public sector. Governments have access to large datasets that, when combined with technology, can deliver powerful solutions and benefits in areas like disaster readiness, public health, criminal justice, education, economic and workforce development to name a few. AI tools can also help us identify trends, prioritize resources, and predict future shocks to make better policy decisions, but it’s more important than ever for governments, non-profits, NGOs, and other organizations that work in the policy space to 1) keep up with technological change, both to understand how technology serves as a vital policy complement as well as its widespread societal impacts, and 2) to guide it’s development and use so that it results in fair and equitable societal outcomes. Join us discussion on the future of AI and policy analysis to create a more equitable society: what’s new, what’s coming, and how our students can be best prepared to take advantage.
