One Dalkeith site salvaged, another in jeopardy
DALKEITH | A for m er place of worship in Dalkeith has been salvaged but the fate of another building ne x t door re m ains in doubt. After two y ears of negotiating with the Al- exandria-Cornwall Ro m an Catholic diocese, the Dalkeith Historical Societ y has beco m e the new owner of the 145- y ear-old for m er St. Paul’s Chapel, and the adjacent m anse. The organization is hosting a public m eet- ing Saturda y , Septe m ber 8 at 9 a. m . to fur- ther infor m the public of its plans. So m e residents fear that the group’s plans include the de m olition of the rector y , which was built in the earl y 1950s. “There has been “talk” about re m oving the m anse fro m the 1845 Dalkeith Road propert y ,” sa y s societ y spokesperson Frances Fraser. “There has also been “talk” about the m aintaining the m anse located at the 1845 location.” The societ y had offered to acquire the chapel for a token su m of $1 and pa y the diocese $5,000 towards the cost of sever- ing the two properties. When severance was dee m ed to be i m possible, the DHS got both buildings. “I can tell y ou that our m ain goal as a charitable/not-for-profit group is and has alwa y s been to m aintain the Cha- pel -- that’s what it’s all about, that’s what our co mm it m ent to the public is based on,” Fraser writes in an e- m ail. As a non-profit organization, “We are not in the business of renting and all that renting i m plies.” Fraser concludes, “The executive will m eet at a later ti m e to discuss and vote

The for m er St. Paul’s Chapel at 1841 Dalkeith Road was originall y the Robertson General Store. John and Janet Robertson were the founders of Dalkeith. The y ca m e fro m Scotland in 1811. Fro m then until 1867, the place was known as Robertson Mills. The post office ca m e to Dalkeith in 1867. Rather than keep their na m e for the village, the Robertsons opted for the na m e of their old ho m etown in Scotland: Dalkei- th.
