One Dalkeith site salvaged, another in jeopardy

DALKEITH | A former place of worship in Dalkeith has been salvaged but the fate of another building next door remains in doubt. After two years of negotiating with the Al- exandria-Cornwall Roman Catholic diocese, the Dalkeith Historical Society has become the new owner of the 145-year-old former St. Paul’s Chapel, and the adjacent manse. The organization is hosting a public meet- ing Saturday, September 8 at 9 a.m. to fur- ther inform the public of its plans. Some residents fear that the group’s plans include the demolition of the rectory, which was built in the early 1950s. “There has been “talk” about removing the manse from the 1845 Dalkeith Road property,” says society spokesperson Frances Fraser. “There has also been “talk” about the maintaining the manse located at the 1845 location.” The society had offered to acquire the chapel for a token sum of $1 and pay the diocese $5,000 towards the cost of sever- ing the two properties. When severance was deemed to be impossible, the DHS got both buildings. “I can tell you that our main goal as a charitable/not-for-profit group is and has always been to maintain the Cha- pel -- that’s what it’s all about, that’s what our commitment to the public is based on,” Fraser writes in an e-mail. As a non-profit organization, “We are not in the business of renting and all that renting implies.” Fraser concludes, “The executive will meet at a later time to discuss and vote

on feedback from the public meeting and from other information we might have.” While the society says it “looks forward to restoring the building and moving into its new home,”some residents are lobbying for the preservation of the former rectory as well. The former St. Paul’s Chapel at 1841 Dalkeith Road was originally the Robertson General Store. John and Janet Robertson were the founders of Dalkeith. They came from Scotland in 1811. From then until 1867, the place was known as Robertson Mills. The post office came to Dalkeith in 1867. Rather than keep their name for the village, the Robertsons opted for the name of their old hometown in Scotland: Dalkei- th.
