Don’t Let Summer Weather Shock Your Roof

OUR YEARLY MAINTENANCE PLAN WILL KEEP YOU COVERED

e may get a surprising amount of rain during the summer months here in Southern Nevada, but that’s not to say we should forget

roofs may be. Whether you need annual or biannual inspections, this plan’s intent is to forecast and eliminate problems before they create a high-cost impact to your building. There are four reasons I always recommend our yearly plan: 1. Catch problems while they’re small. Inspections exist to stop problems from becoming bigger and costing more down the road. 2. Protect your roof’s warranty. Some warranties are 10, 20, or even 30 years in length, and to keep it valid with manufacturers, yearly maintenance is required under the terms of the warranty. 3. Make a course correction. Regular inspections can see what kind of maintenance or wear and tear you’ve been applying to your roof and help you take action to correct it where needed. For example, if regular access to one part of your roof has compromised it, an inspection can determine how best to resolve that issue and find a safer access point. 4. Avoid losses from secondary damage. Property managers know how much extensive and unexpected repairs can cost. If there’s a leak or damage to repair, the building closures and downtime of employees alone adds up to thousands of dollars lost. Not to mention, the expense of making the repair itself is high. Regular inspection can save you a lot of headache and money. It has become one of my many mottos to always say, “The cost of yearly maintenance to your roof is always substantially lower than

that the summer brings some excruciating heat to our part of the world — we are in a desert, after all. That means that while rain can compromise your roof if it’s not properly built or cared for, you should also be aware that desert heat can do just as much damage. The summer months bring a drastic change in temperature between day and night. When our average temperature soars to 105 degrees F during the day, it often drops by at least 30 degrees after the sun goes down. This creates what we call “thermal shock” in building materials. In high heat, the material that makes up a roof expands. Then, as the temperature goes down at night, the coolness causes changes to the roof. Large expansion and contraction in a short period of time puts physical strain on the roof, causes excessive wear, and decreases its lifespan. Even though you may not be able to see it or may not feel all its negative effects until your building gets rained on, thermal shock can cause compromising damage to all parts of your roof, from your drain areas to your tilt-up panels. That’s why now is a great time to let a team of experts take a look at the damage our crazy weather might be causing and fix it before something worse happens. Dri Tech Corp’s yearly maintenance plan is the course of action we recommend to all our clients, no matter how old or new their

THE MOST FAMOUS ART HEIST YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF

Meet the Man Who Stole the ‘Mona Lisa’

One hundred and nine years ago this month, one man — or was it three? — fled from the Louvre Museum in Paris, carrying what would quickly become the world’s most famous painting: Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” Historical accounts of the theft agree only on who was the ringleader: 30-year-old Louvre handyman Vincenzo Peruggia. He was a house painter, an immigrant, the bearer of a glorious Monopoly Man mustache, and a vehement Italian patriot. At some point on the morning of Aug. 21, 1911, Peruggia lifted the glass case he himself had constructed to house the “Mona Lisa” and smuggled the painting from the building. Some versions of the story say Peruggia was assisted by two brothers, fellow Italian handymen Vincenzo and Michele Lancelotti. NPR reports the trio spent the night preceding the theft huddled in one of the Louvre’s supply closets, lying in wait to steal the portrait. In his documentary about the theft, director Joe Medeiros claims Peruggia acted alone, driven by an obsession with the work and a dream of returning the painting to Italy.

Either way, we know that Peruggia successfully spirited the painting back to his one-bedroom apartment. There it lay concealed in a false- bottomed trunk for more than two years. This period of mysterious absence (during which police grilled and dismissed Peruggia as a suspect in favor of J.P. Morgan, Pablo Picasso, and playwright Guillaume Apollinaire) is what made the “Mona Lisa” world famous. Peruggia was eventually caught attempting to sell the painting in Italy. He pleaded guilty and spent eight months in jail. After his release, he enlisted in the Italian army to fight in World War I, surviving the war only to die of a heart attack on his 44th birthday. Though Peruggia married after the war, some suspect that the true love of his life was the “Mona Lisa” herself. In a CNN article, author and art history professor Noah Charney speculates that over his two years with her, Peruggia developed romantic feelings for the portrait. Perhaps he fell victim to a kind of “reverse Stockholm syndrome,” Charney suggests, the captor falling in love with his hostage. “In this case,” he says, “the hostage was a work of art.”

ach of us is responsible for delivering on our commitments. When we work with clients and face a challenge that hasn’t been tackled yet, no matter who is at the core of the work to be done, each of us holds ourselves accountable to see that work through. Every project starts with a person primarily responsible for reaching the end point, and even if the project receives assistance from others along the way, our core value of personal responsibility means we hold ourselves responsible no matter how that responsibility changes. When you become busy and start adding new team members to a project to help out, it can be really easy to just pass things off and move on to something else. But we say that if you’ve committed to doing something, you are responsible for that end result no matter what role you play in how it’s achieved along the way. For our clients, this commitment means you can always count on our people to see a project through to completion and know that the person who started the project with you will also be there with you at its end. A USEFUL TOOL FOR YOU: DRONES Additional Service to Yearly Preventative Maintenance

and pictures of the condition of the roof, which we can then show our customers. This gives us the chance to discuss and explain certain projects with these aerial views. The drone became such a useful tool that we started adding it as a service to yearly preventative- maintenance packages. Drone service is still pretty new for us, so we don’t know how we’re integrating it fully, but for right now, it’s a fantastic option for yearly preventative maintenance. That’s because when a roof is under the manufacturer’s warranty, which is typically 15–30 years, in order to keep it valid, the business has to have their roof inspected once or twice a year. By adding drone footage to that regular inspection service, we have ensured this routine is completed in a more efficient way. Although we have not used this tool for long, we definitely see ourselves using it well into the future.

Many people think of drones as fun toys they can play with in their backyard, around their neighborhood, or at a public park. But drones are also extremely helpful when responding to emergencies, providing disaster relief and health care, tracking animals, and even helping farmers analyze their fields. Our team at Dri Tech Corp also saw an opportunity to incorporate drones into the services we offer. As drones allow aerial views of a surrounding area, we realized this technology could significantly benefit our customers. About a year ago, we got our first drone and began to put it to use. We were able to maneuver the drone up above any building to look at its roof, and it quickly became apparent that our customers appreciated this new device. It gave them a view they couldn’t have otherwise seen. Normally, we can’t get roofscape images unless one of our team members stands on a roof, but with our drone, no one has to be sent up there for updates or for other roof projects.

Since then, our team has done a lot of work with our drone. We’re able to take videos

OUR BOYS ARE BACK ON THE ICE

The NHL has transitioned into Phase 2, and Phase 3 could be coming any day if not already here, which means our Vegas Golden Knights finally headed back to City National Arena on June 8. The team has been practicing in small groups both on and off the ice, and

acquired, and finding a rhythm with head coach Peter DeBoer, the Knights should be positioned well for the playoffs. Changes are happening fast, so make sure you don’t miss a beat by keeping up at NHL.com/goldenknights.

after two-and-a-half months of garage workouts, the arena was a welcome sight. We’re getting closer and closer to hitting the “play” button after the 2020 season has gone on pause, and even though the VGK were a little rough for wear when the pause occurred, with a veteran team, new players

3 Tips to Upgrade Your Outdoor Space

Outdoor spaces are the perfect spot for reading or hosting your next barbecue. Use these tips from our friends at Wayfair and Living Spaces to turn your outdoor space into your own oasis for any season. 1. BRIGHT AND COLORFUL: Accent your drab outdoor space with accent chairs, bright pillows or rugs, or colorful outdoor utensils. With designs trending toward coastal and natural styles, greens, blues, and yellows are going to become the go-to colors. 2. EMBRACE PLANTS: One of the easiest ways to add style to any space is to embrace greenery. Whether this means fixing up your landscaping or adding houseplants, this could be just what your patio needs. 3. TURN IT INSIDE OUT: With a greater emphasis on staying home, you’ll want to bring the indoor conveniences you enjoy outside. Look to outdoor kitchens, daybeds, and even movie setups to create the ultimate gathering space. 3 TRENDS TO SPRUCE UP YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE!
