The Sept. 27 marathon cycle tour fol- lows the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail (PRRT), between Hammond and St-Eugène. The 65-kilometre route has starting points in both communities and four pit stops for cyclists taking part. The society’s Cornwall o$ce, representing the Five Counties re- gion of Eastern Ontario, is organizing the event but participation is not limited to just cyclists from the counties of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott and Russell. “Cancer touches everyone, directly and indirectly,” said Sylvie Guénette, society fun- draising coordinator, “and it’s fundamental to create awareness everywhere.” She noted that the regional o$ce’s two annual Relay for Life events in Maxville and Ingleside have proven “huge successes” over the years in both raising money for cancer research and public awareness of the continuing e"orts to develop both sup- port program for cancer patients and their families, and treatment and potential cures for the various forms of cancer. The event has the solid support of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR). “We’re very honoured to take part in this event with the Canadian Cancer Society,” stated UCPR Warden Jean-Paul St-Pierre. “The Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail is one of our proudest tourist features in the region.” One particular goal of the inaugural Hubs of Hope cycling tour is help raise aware- ness of the society’s local transportation program for cancer patients in the region. People registered with the program who are in need of transport to an appointment for therapy or other cancer-related needs, can have a volunteer driver arrive at their door to o"er not just a lift but also com- pany and support along the way. Last year the program provided rides for 405 cancer patients living in the Five Counties region, including 28 children with their parents who needed help getting to appointments.
