President's Message
Welcome back! The 2026–2027 year is well underway, and it’s a pleasure to welcome both familiar and new faces. Thank you for sharing how much you enjoy our classes, clubs, and community—and for reminding us of ICL’s impact. Your enthusiasm, friendships, and love of learning make ICL special. We now have over 700 fall and annual members, including our dedicated instructors. Many of our offerings still have space— so please check the website. Friends and family can join anytime and enjoy all ICL offers! First, an apology. We had a parking issue this fall and issued temporary paper permits while the issue was addressed. We hope it is fixed by the time you read this. Thank you for your patience and thank you to the Utah Tech Parking Office for working with us on a temporary solution!

Looking ahead: Your ICL Council will hold its first meeting of the year on September 30th, and Council members are already working behind the scenes on several exciting initiatives. I’ll have more to share about what we’re working on in next month’s column. On a personal note: How many grandparents attend college with their grandchildren? Thanks to ICL, I’m one of the lucky ones. My husband and I retired to St. George to be near our son and three grandchildren. We cared for Carson and picked up Paytin and Mathew from school, but those treasured moments grew fewer as they got older. When Mathew considered Utah Tech, my campus knowledge helped me guide him through tours, deadlines, and FAFSA. He was admitted and is thriving. Then, Paytin chose Utah Tech to study Environmental Studies. I helped with her application, and she was accepted—leading us to freshman orientation!

As ICL president, I staffed a freshman orientation booth to introduce students to us “gray hairs” and encourage their families to join. Among more than 2,000 freshmen, Paytin spotted me, and we shared a joyful hug. Mathew was also there volunteering with the College of Business—and I got another hug. This school year, we’ll compare schedules and meet for lunch—guess who’s buying? One grandchild remains, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he chooses Utah Tech. I will continue taking ICL classes and someday share lunch with him, too! I loved seeing my grandchildren on campus, but I’ve especially enjoyed meeting our enthusiastic newcomers and welcoming returning members. Our members’ warmth, curiosity, and commitment to a community of lifelong learners heartens me every day. That’s what makes ICL special — not just the classes, but the people, friendships, shared experiences, and the joy of learning together.

ICL Spring Bus Tour – March 9–11, 2027
Get ready for another memorable ICL adventure this spring! From March 9–11, 2027, during Spring Break, we have secured one of the Road Scholar buses and our wonderful guide, Diana Hawks, for another exciting adventure. By popular request (we don’t want to say demand, but we could! LOL), we are heading back to Death Valley! This has been one of our most popular bus trips, and since we were able to schedule it during Spring Break, what better time to explore Death Valley? We’ll make several fun stops along the way, including Lost City Museum, Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, Shoshone Village, and more! And there’s another special reason this is a perfect time to visit Death Valley!

The new moon is March 8, just one day before our trip begins, which means we should have wonderfully dark skies while we are there. Death Valley is famous for its incredible night skies, so keep your eyes on the stars — we may have a spectacular opportunity for some stargazing! Because this trip is earlier than most of our bus tours, pricing and registration information will be available in mid-October. We will send out a separate flyer with all the details, including pricing. So please, watch your email for details . Due to the overwhelming popularity of our bus tours, registration will once again be handled through our lottery process. Lottery registration opens Oct. 19 and closes Oct. 30th. Lottery winners will be picked on Nov. 2, with payment due Nov. 13. “Sir, now that you’ve lost the election, what do you plan to do with all that free time?” I’d heard that question a thousand times, so forgive me if I sound a little irritated.
“It’s Mr. President to you,” I snapped, “and for the record, I did not lose the election; it was rigged. Stolen! Rumored to be by someone wearing a dress.” I ground my teeth, then added, “And if you must know, I plan to spend some quality time with my wife.” True to my word, I teamed up with Linda’s shadow and followed her around the house for a week. Then, I stepped on her heel. “Ouch!” Dancing on one foot, she whirled around. “What are you doing?” “Spending quality time with you.” She stared at me for several seconds—the same way people stare at a mole they’re pretty sure wasn’t there yesterday. Then she screamed, “Get the #~%+ outta my house!”
Loosely translated and without the expletives, it means, “Get a job!” Yeah, I thought, she’s right. So, I posted this ad on KSL Classifieds:
A former, wrongly deposed President seeks employment. I speak one language, though not fluently. I have limited people skills, but I do know how to cook the books. I have all my hair, most of my teeth, some of my marbles and brand-new hearing aids. To my credit, I still have my prostate, though that’s becoming a bit of a problem as I require frequent bathroom breaks. References are available upon request, though most are dead. Zero! Nada! None! Not a nibble! I know you’re as shocked as I am, but I got no response, no takers, though I did get some pity mail and the name of a psychiatrist. Certainly not a quitter, I plan to try again—and soon. But now, I need to find a restroom.

Help ICL Spread the Word!
The Institute for Continued Learning is known as Washington County's "hidden gem," but we are working hard to spread the word about our wonderful classes, clubs, and community. Throughout September, our dedicated volunteers have been busy staffing exhibit booths at Ivins Heritage Days, Songs of Dixie, and Education Night at Entrada. This month, we'll have a booth at the Dixie Center for the Huntsman World Senior Games, every day from Oct. 4-17. We know many of our members compete in the games and volunteer at various events, and some of you are just there to cheer them on... so we hope you'll stop by the ICL booth while you're there to say "hello" and take a fun selfie. We would love to share your activities and accomplishments on our Facebook page, so please email your booth selfie to icl@utahtech.edu, as well as photos of you competing or volunteering at the games. Please include your name and the name of the event you competed in or volunteered for. Many people don't know we have a Facebook page. Member Spotlight Cindy Gilmore has been an active ICL member since she and her husband, Wayne Peterson, moved to St. George full time in 2014. They were drawn by the area's beautiful scenery, but Cindy says opportunities such as the Huntsman Games and ICL “clinched the deal,” making St. George their “forever home.” She has enjoyed taking classes and even taught ICL Cornhole Toss for several years. While still a part-time resident, Cindy began competing in swimming at the Huntsman Games in 2008. This marks her 17th year of participation, excluding the year the Games were canceled due to COVID. She has competed in swimming every year and, just for fun, has also tried table tennis, golf skills, and indoor rowing. Her usual events are the 50-, 100-, and 200-meter backstroke; the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke; and the 100-meter individual medley. Cindy also serves as co-captain of the Trailblazers Masters Swim Group, which swims in the
Olympic-size pool at the Human Performance Center on the Utah Tech campus. The group has swimmers of all abilities, with members from ages 18 to 90, pursuing goals ranging from general fitness and competitive swimming to triathlon training. Cindy enjoys the camaraderie and describes the group as fun and welcoming, with members often socializing in the hot tub after workouts. Cindy Gilmore Although the program does not offer swim lessons, the Masters coach provides feedback to help members improve their strokes. Members can choose from 10 weekly workouts, Monday through Friday from 6 to 7 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m. For a low monthly fee, members may attend as many sessions as they like. Club Spotlight
With more than 100 active members, the Desert Archaeology Society (DAS) is one of ICL's longest-standing clubs. Believing that education is essential to preserving rock art and our valuable archaeological sites, the club hosts monthly meetings led by subject-matter experts and field trips where members can view petroglyphs firsthand. For more than 10 years, the club was led by Feather Robinson , whose father was of Blackfeet heritage. As a researcher and teacher of archaeoastronomy, archaeology, Native plant uses, and Native American traditions, Feather shared her knowledge of these subjects. During her tenure, she brought DAS outstanding monthly speakers—including archaeologists, historians, and members who shared petroglyph photographs from across the Southwest and beyond. Feather's dedication and energy grew and sustained the club for many years.

This fall, Feather passed the torch to Gary Smith , an active DAS member since 2016, who led the monthly field trips until two years ago. After retiring from a Salt Lake City company in 2014, Gary moved to St. George, having fallen in love with the area while visiting friends. He jokes that the real reason was that “he didn't want to shovel snow anymore.” An amateur archaeologist and avid scenic photographer, Gary learned about the Desert Archaeology Society from a friend in his photography club. An educator at heart, Gary embraced the DAS mission of “Preservation through Education” and became an integral member of the club. His goal is to help the Desert Archaeology Society thrive and continue sharing knowledge with the community. At the September DAS meeting, members heard a presentation from Krystal Glass, lead ranger for the National Park Service at Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. At the time of this writing, DAS is scheduled for a club picnic and field trip to Little Black Mountain on September 26. The site was used by Native Americans for ceremonial purposes over 8,000 years and is home to a wide variety of petroglyphs. Instructor Spotlight
Add your body text We are grateful to our talented new instructors sharing their time and expertise with the ICL community this fall. One of them, Keith Farrar , is teaching two Wilderness Survival classes and four First Aid/CPR workshops. After his originally scheduled Wilderness Survival class and three First Aid/CPR workshops filled immediately, Keith generously added another session of each. Keith has taught outdoor survival and primitive skills for 20 years and First Aid/CPR for more than 12 years. Before becoming an instructor, he spent 30 years as a professional photographer, running a wedding, portrait, and event photography business and working part time for the Associated Press. Keith, his wife Stephanie, and their two sons moved from Las Vegas to California to be near family, lived there for 13 years, and relocated to St. George in 2024. They first discovered St. George during an RV trip and loved it even more after settling here. Keith learned about ICL from his wife a year ago and began taking classes. Recognizing the value of First Aid/CPR and nature skills for ICL members, he volunteered to teach—and we are grateful he did! While living in California, Keith’s passion for hiking and backpacking inspired him to expand his outdoor skills. At the School of Self-Reliance, he studied survival, primitive, and general outdoor

skills, later becoming an instructor at the school. He still returns to California several times a year to teach there. For 15 years, he also led schoolchildren on nature walks through California State Parks and National Park Service sites, teaching them about plants, animal tracks, wildlife, and Chumash and Tongva cultures. Keith also studied first aid and wilderness medicine to complement his hiking, backpacking, and State Park volunteer work. When the Park Service needed First Aid/CPR instructors, he became certified and taught there for several years. He continues to return to California twice a year to teach First Aid/CPR at Malibu Creek State Park.
Keith earned First Aid/CPR instructor certifications from the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association, as well as Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association. He currently holds Emergency Care and Safety Institute certifications that allow him to teach as a private volunteer. He is also certified to teach the Stop the Bleed and California Epinephrine Auto-Injector programs. Although wilderness survival has no official certification system, Keith attained the levels of Master Bushcraft Instructor and Master-Level Wilderness Survival Instructor at the School of Self-Reliance. In his rare spare time, Keith regularly attends primitive-skills gatherings. Participants learn skills such as stone-tool making, friction fire-starting, hide tanning, and identifying edible and medicinal plants—all of which foster a closer connection with nature.
Keith genuinely enjoys sharing his knowledge and has seen firsthand how first aid and nature skills are valuable for people of all ages and experience levels. He recalls reassuring a boy with ADHD that a nature walk offered many ways to stay engaged, if one thing no longer held his attention, they would just move on to something else. As they walked, Keith explained everything from plants and animal tracks to Native American culture. After the walk, Keith taught him to start a friction fire and the boy called it his best field trip ever, proving nature skills can be of benefit to everyone. If you missed Keith’s fall classes, don’t worry, they will return this spring!

NEW Garden Club!
We’re excited to launch ICL’s new Garden Club! The club will meet monthly this fall at 6 p.m. on 9/28, 10/19, and 11/16, with occasional special events and projects. Activities will be held in the peaceful garden behind the ICL office at 658 E 200 S, which features several large raised beds. Past efforts to start a garden club lacked a leader, so we’re especially pleased to welcome Dr. Bryan Stevens. He brings extensive knowledge and creative ideas while allowing members to shape the club’s activities and projects. Bryan is an Adjunct instructor in the Biology Department at Utah Tech and Director of the Andrew H. Barnum Museum of Natural History. He holds a PhD in Entomology with an emphasis on Pest Control. He has been the Utah Tech Student Garden Club advisor for 8+ years. Bryan grew up in Wyoming loving nature. His grandma had an amazing garden and he learned to "love" it even more during the summers when he had to work in the garden. His wife of 30 plus years is an educator as well, and he has three grown children and one grandchild. Dr. Bryan Stevens You don't have to have a green thumb - just bring your enthusiasm and ideas!
