Sledge hockey rules the ice Friday night Photo SHEO

The Ottawa Sledgehammers will provide some good examples of how nothing stops a true-blue Canadian from keeping his stick on the ice when it comes to enjoying hockey in a Friday night National Sledge Hockey League grudge match against the Montréal Transat at the Canadian International Hockey Academy Arena in Rockland.

Hockey is Canada’s national sport. Anywhere, anytime, if there is any possible way Canadians will figure out to play hockey, whether it is a Stanley Cup playoffs match for the pros or a pickup game of pond ice shinny for the kids. The Canadian International Hockey Academy Arena (CIHA) hosts the Ottawa Sledgehammers and the Montréal Transat as they pound away on each other in Na- tional Sledge Hockey League action (NSHL) sponsored by Sledge Hockey Eas- tern Ontario (SHEO). The puck drops at 7 p.m. with “icebreaker” demo sessions between the Rockland Nationals and the Bantam PGL minor squads against the SHEO intermediate and junior teams. The main event follows after the zamboni cleans the ice when the Sledgehammers and Transat slide onto the ice at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door, and also available at the Rockland Boston Pizza, or through the Rockland Nationals Hockey Club. Proceeds will help support the Rockland Nationals, the Bantam PGL, SHEO, and the Ottawa Sledgehammers, with a portion also going to the Prescott- Russell branch of the Make a Wish Foundation.

The Finns were in Canada as part of a seven-game tour that saw them play in a tournament in Toronto as well as take part in three friendly exhibition games in the Ottawa area. “Hockey is popular in Finland but not in the way that it’s popular here,” said Juha Tall, who organized the tour for Team S-Kiekko, from Sienäjoki Finland. “This is Hockeyland, you know, even we know it!” The event was designed to foster goodwill between the players on the two teams, said Richard Sennott, executive director of the Ottawa District Hockey Asso- ciation. “People forget that hockey is not just learning hockey, it’s learning life skills, getting along with people, teamwork, meeting new people,” he said. Team S-Kiekko toured the CIHA facility before the game then shared a spaghetti dinner with their new Cobra friends at G.A.B.’s Sports Bar afterwards. Rockland’s Simon Houle scored three goals and was named player of the game for the Cobras. Martin Carriere from Embrun added a pair of markers and singles went to Mikaël Gaumond, Justin Crawford and Graham Dénommé, all from the Rockland area. Pekka Alanko was named player of the game for Team S-Kiekko. The Rockland Nats Hockey Association provided ice time for the game, which drew a crowd of over 300 people. A portion of the proceeds from the game was donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada. The Cobras have staged several fundraisers to sup- port the organization, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
