Nov. 11, 1951 THE PROTESTANT CHURCH MEETS YOUTH NEEDS 1 Tim. 4:12-16 Perhaps at one time genuine Protes tants did protest against the evil prac tices of Romanism, particularly among their young people. It is a well-known fact that it is rare, indeed, to find young persons in the Catholic faith who care anything at all about godliness, Chris tian living, the Word of God, and the spiritual blessing of the soul. It is God’s truth that sets men free. It is God’s Word that meets the need of young hearts and minds. The exhortation, “ Re member now thy creator . . . ” is the key to spiritual blessing. Young People Should Be an Example 1 Tim. 4:12 It is difficult these days to point to a young person in high school or college and say, “ That person is an ideal Chris tian.” Many are examples of habitual smokers and drinkers, and of evil lust and desire. The truth of Martin Luther, the great emancipator from Romanism, was contained in those few words, “ The just shall live by faith.” No one would buy hair tonic from a bald-headed man. So in spiritual realms, no one will be lieve the message when the life does not exemplify the truth spoken by the lips. Young People Should Read Good Literature 1 Tim. 4:13 God does not expect His children to be ignorant of His wonderful handiwork in nature. If the young person would be valuable to society and a blessing in the church, then he will need to read things that are profitable and avoid the dime novel variety. The bookstand is full of alluring and lurid magazines. These are to the mind what morphine is to the body. They dull the senses and greatly hinder usefulness. Read profitable books that will enrich the life. Young People Should Meditate on Spiritual Matters 1 Tim. 4:15 We live in a day when there are few thinkers. Literature is offered which re quires no thinking to read. Foods are prepared ready to eat to avoid thinking how to cook. In almost every realm in ventors have made it easy to live with out thinking. It is not so in the Chris tian life. Unless we meditate on the things of God they will not penetrate our hearts. Unless we cogitate on the truth of God it will not have effective sharpness on our path. Paul said, “ Think on these things.” As the heart meditates on the precious truths of God they become embodied in the human life. Young People Should Do for God 1 Tim. 4:16 First it is necessary to be a Christian before we can live the Christian life. We must get ourselves right with God and then our doctrine will be right. We

must know the Lord of glory and then carry out His plans. It is necessary for us to be the right person and then do the right thing. This is true in every country on the earth. This is an original teaching of Protestantism. Romanism shows no interest in the development of character but only the development of power. Young people in every place need to be told that there is a Saviour and a Judge who will handle each case righteously. Nov. 18, 1951 THANK GOD AND TAKE COURAGE Acts 28:1-20 All of God’s servants enjoy fellowship and association^with other of God’s precious people. The prominent ones of God’s servants live rather lonely lives in some instances. They are always in the lime-light. All classes of people ex pect to receive something from them. Very few give to them. Paul rejoiced because he saw others of the same faith and also because they had come to meet him in such a sad and serious situation. His heart was hungry and these men filled his heart with their love and de votion. We Should Believe That God Arranges Properly Acts 28:1 How strange it is that this mighty man of God who performed miracles and who knew about the storms that had been calmed by the word of Jesus did not himself work a miracle as he sailed. Instead of deliverance, the ship was lost. Instead of bringing them to the safe harbor, they were cast upon an island. Did God fail? Is he now losing to Satan? No, “ God moves in a mysterious way” and places us where He sees there is a need for the ministry which we can supply. We Should Be Diligent in Service Acts 28:8 In the midst of the heathen, Paul was busy for God. He did not permit ad verse circumstances to dampen his spirits nor hush his song. He found a means of service among a strange peo ple and under strange circumstances. This is the proper attitude for God’s people to take. Those who have given themselves over to the Holy Spirit may expect Him to be the Lord and to do what He wants to, regardless of our plans or programs. Those heathen on Melita would probably never have heard the gospel except for the shipwreck. We Should Seek the Fellowship of Others Acts 28:15 Although the persons who came to meet Paul were strangers to him, he perceived that they belonged to the Lord. Therefore he embraced them as brothers. He could not have fellowship with the soldiers or with the unsaved fellow-travelers. His heart must have T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S
