every cork. Any one of them, if left, will hinder freedom. Now that they are re moved, the water is free to run out into this tumbler. People are freed from sin’s captivity in the same way. When sin is confessed and put away, people are no longer held in bondage. The children of Israel cried unto God and He delivered them from the bondage of Egypt. He sent Moses to lead them out. God sent the Lord Jesus Christ into the world to die on the cross, that He might be our Great Deliverer. Through faith in ' His shed blood we can have our sins forgiven, and be freed from sin’s slavery. Illustrated by Gladys Bowman life, and they think that others who have more liberty than-they are allowed, are really getting more out of life, but they forget that the pleasures of the world are not as they appear on the outside. It is best to do only the things that can be done to the glory of God, and to choose His way instead of the paths of sin. November 11, 1951 C orks C an C ause C aptivity Objects: A bottle half full of water; five corks covered respectively with black, purple, yellow, green, and white paper; and a tumbler. Lesson: Why doesn’t the water come out of this bottle when I shake it and turn it upside down? “ It has a cork in it.” I know it is corked, but it is a clean white cork. There isn’t a spot of dirt on it; but it, nevertheless, holds the water captive in the bottle. There are many things in life which may not look bad, but they are bad if they hold a person captive. We will remove the white cork and see whether the pretty green one will still hold the water captive. Yes, the color is different but the result is the same. People are often held captive by the green sin of envy. This yellow cork looks pretty, but is not pretty if it causes the water to be held captive in the bottle. Not a drop of water can pass the yellow cork. We will let this cork remind us of pleasure. People think they are having freedom if they have a great deal of pleasure, but pleasure can keep them from having the true joy God wants us to have. The purple cork of worldliness also keeps the water captive. Worldly people sooner or later find themselves enslaved by their ungodly desires. We expect this ugly black cork to hold the water in, and it does. All sin is black in the sight of God. Any sin that is allowed to have a place in a person’s

Objects: A lily, a glass of water, and a small glass containing sulphuric acid. (Handle the acid with care, so as not to touch the bare hands.) Cover the glass with beautiful paper, such as is found in lined envelopes.

Lesson: This is a silly lily, because of the foolish things it does. God intended that a lily should drink pure water such as is found in-this glass. See how pure and sparkling the water looks. I place the lily in the glass, but she is not sat isfied to remain there. The other glass looks much more interesting and beau tiful. She thinks that perhaps it has something in it which would be different from this plain water. Now watch the silly lily. She climbs out and walks over to the beautiful glass. Yes, it is more beautiful looking than the plain one from which she came. After examining the outside and admir ing its beauty, ¡she decides to investigate the inside. (Hold by stem and place a part of the blossom in the acid.) Look! The lily is marred and burned. The outside of the glass was beautiful to cover up the ugly inside. In thinking of this silly lily, I am reminded of how different Moses was. In Hebrews 11:25, we find that he did not make the foolish choice this lily did, but that he chose “ rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.” He was a prince in Pharaoh’s palace, but he chose to leave all this and be God’s man to lead the children of Israel out of bondage. God had a great plan for Moses’ life—but Moses had to make his decision whether to follow God’s way or the glittering life of the palace. He made a wise decision. He knew that the pleasures of sin might look attractive, but only last “for a season,” and that their end is ruin and destruction. The lily also reminds me of boys and girls who are living today. They very often get tired of living a plain, clean O C T O B E R , 1 9 5 1
