THE KING’S BUSINESS
He could help them in their need. Observe that Christ accepted no help or testimony from the evil spirits who knew Him. Christ would not let the devil have a chance to boast that he had helped Jesus. Mark the patiepce, love and compassion of Christ. He healed them one by one (Luke 4:40), no doubt ministering late into the night. Wouldn’t you like to have spent that Sunday with Him? But we have this same Christ, and he is the same yester day, today and forever. “What a wonder ful Saviour is Jesus my Lord.” spoke and made the man well: and went about the country telling o f His great power. There were many homes that day where people said, “ I wish we could take sister to be made well” ; or “I want to help take brother”—o r mother, or whoever was sick. They could not go till sunset, until their Sabbath was over, for it would be breaking their law. When the Lord Jesus and His four friends left the church, some one met them with bad news. I think it might have been Peter’s little children, if he had any, saying, “Grandma is sick, grandma is sick.” For someone had told them this, and when they got to Peter’s house the dear grandma was very sick. The Master went in and took her by the hand. She* was made well, and got the dinner for. them. They had a happy afternoon and when the sun had gone down, friends came to see them. The Bible says it seemed as if the whole town had come to their house. The Lord Jesus was there, and all the people who had been waiting for Sthe sun to go down, had brought their dear ones for Him to make well. There must have been many happy homes in Capernaum that night, for “He healed many that were sick.” They would have been happier yet if they had known what you and I do. He could do something greater than that. He came to save His people from their sins. Prayer.
for His goodness (1 Cor. 2:9). Evening .—How were they disturbed? Picture vividly this beautiful evening scene. Twilight was gathering, the sun fast disappearing in the West. From every street and- alley people were making their way to Peter’s home because Christ was there. Friends carried some on cots. Others were on crutches. Some led the blind. Parents were there with their chil dren. There may have been some idle curious gazers, but most were there because they believed in our Lord and believed that M emory V erse : “He healed many that were sick.”—Mark 1 :34. Approach .—Were you ever sick? Who did y'ou need to help you get well? Yes, some times mother, and sometimes doctor-friend, but always some one else—-the Lord Jesus. He makes sick folks well, but He does more than that. He makes sad people happy and bad people good, which is far better. W e know these things now, but there was a time when people thought He could only make sick people well. Presentation .—The Lord Jesus moved to Capernaum to live; can you think: of the reason? He had friends there who were going to be His helpers, He wanted to live near them. Do you remember their names? - The little town was on the shore of a great lake. The houses were whitp, with stairs on the outside, up to the flat tops, where the mothers and children spent most o f the day in the sun. They could see the blue sea o f Galilee, the white sails o f the boats, the many other flat-topped houses and the beautiful church, called “the syna gogue” , (omit name for younger ones). In that country any one who wished to could stand up and teach in the church. When the Lord Jesus and His friends went to the church, He taught them as no one had ever done before. On one of the first Sabbaths, a man came in who had a sick ness that no one but the Lord Jesus could make well. The people wondered when He
