Sure we can! 2014-2015 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Wander the halls of our hospital and you’ll witness WDMH Pride everywhere. We are here for you - from childbirth to seniors’ care. We have a ‘sure we can’ attitude – working hard to ensure every patient experience is the best it can be. Together, we have much to be proud of. X Despite a five-year funding freeze, WDMH is actually doing more. We’ve added specialty clinics in endocrinology, neurology and rheumatology, as well as a new cardiac rehabilitation program. umbrella – continue to support coordinated services for patients in the hospital, residents in nursing homes, and clients of community services. Plans are underway to expand the Community Care Building for some of these important partners.
Program continues to be one of the most popular in the country. Upon graduation, many of these students turn their educational opportunity into a career at WDMH. X We received workplace awards from both the Ontario Hospital Association and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, recognizing a commitment to health and wellness for the more than 600 staff, physicians and volunteers who work at WDMH. X Finally – and perhaps most importantly – we are proud of our strong patient satisfaction results. WDMH’s key patient areas were identified as among the top programs in Ontario. It’s great news that encourages us to strive to do even more.
X We welcomed several new members to the WDMH team - a new Obstetrician/Gynecologist, Urologist, Social Worker, Cancer Care Navigator and Chief Research Officer. X Our telemedicine program is growing as we connect patients to specialists via video. The result is shorter wait times and less travel. Outpatient physiotherapy is also expanding, with a satellite clinic for specific groups of patients in Embrun. X The local baby boom continues with another record year! 761 babies were born at WDMH. X Our strong community partnerships – under The Centre of Excellence for Rural Health and Education
X We welcomed new partners inside the hospital as well. Due to a reduction in Administration, we have additional space for Bayshore HealthCare to offer wound care and IV clinics. X WDMH is proud to be part of the regional Healthy Foods initiative, offering healthier options in the cafeteria, vending machines and Gift Shoppe. X A new Patient and Family Engagement Committee has been established to provide another way for patients to provide input. X Last year, our physicians and staff trained more than 250 students. Our Family Medicine Residency
The heart of WDMH A recent post on WDMH’s Facebook page sums it up: “I was just at the hospital with my four young children. The volunteers at the front were so friendly and when they overheard that we had dropped a toy along the way, one of them got right up and went to find it. Thank you!”
If I had a million dollars – or $1,364,789 to be exact! Through the generosity of current and past donors, the WDMH Foundation transferred $1,364,789 to WDMH this past year. The money purchased 27 pieces of equipment and new technology, not funded by the provincial government. We can’t thank our donors enough. WDMH patients will now benefit from a specialized pill packaging machine, a CT Scanner upgrade, a gastroscope, two defibrillators and much, much more.
On any given day, you will see some of the more than 200 WDMH volunteers making a difference at the hospital and in local communities. Last year, they provided close to 11,000 hours of service with a smile. And they give even more through their fundraising efforts. Their current goal is to raise $250,000 for a portable x-ray machine.
Despite this wonderful work, the need for more volunteers always exists, especially in leadership roles. The Auxiliary welcomes new members to help add that extra touch for WDMH patients. Call 613-774-2422 ext. 6323 for more information.
