Out-of-town relatives who are visiting for the holidays might wonder what makes Emmett so special. But we already know the Treasure Valley is full of gems — and we don’t just mean the rocks. Here are some additional reasons Emmett and The Gem State are great. WE’VE GOT SUNSHINE On average, we have 210 sunny days per year. Compare that to 144 rainy days in Portland and we can feel pretty happy about all our free vitamin D.

EQUINOX

Look at your March calendar, and you’ll see a special note on March 20: spring equinox. What is this date? And why did it matter to ancient civilizations? The word equinox comes from Latin — “equi” meaning equal and “nox” meaning night. It marks the day when the sun’s terminator (the divide between night and day) is perpendicular to the equator, giving equal amounts of day and night to each side of the earth. We have a spring and a fall equinox because of the Earth’s rotation and tilt. For ancient civilizations, time was marked by the sun’s activity, so the equinox was a big event. For us, it’s a sign that the days are starting to get longer and warmer! Celebrate by enjoying a hike in our beautiful foothills. The equinox is also a good marker of when we can begin to prepare our gardens.
