AWA Publishes Sleeve Labeling Market Study

AWA Alexander Watson Associates has published AWAreness Report Global Sleeve Label Market 2021, a study of the sleeve labeling market The study is an update on the status of the sleeve labeling market. It confirms how strongly it has estab- lished itself in a relatively short timescale, claiming around 19 percent of the overall global label market. This maturing technology registers strong growth at an annual 3.3 percent. As the study documents, most of the volumes are in heat shrink sleeves, representing around 89 percent of usage, and with the Asian region claiming the highest volumes by far. Across all the sleeve label formats, the primary end- use sector is the beverage market at 64 percent of vol- umes, with food-related applications in second place at 16 percent. In 2020, theAsian convenience stores and restaurants were hit by the lockdowns and restrictions, relaying the impact on the heavily dependent Asian beverage market. Beverages amounting to over 70 percent of the end-use segment for the sleeve label market inAsia left a significant impact on the market. Whereas his- torically, the Asian market has seen the highest annual growth rates for sleeve labels, in 2020, it experienced a slowdown in its growth, falling short of its initial fore- casted yearly growth rate of 5.5 percent and giving way for higher growth rates in 2020 for European and North American markets. The study examines the different sleeve material sub- strates used for each format, as well as the structure of the related supply chains, and documents in-depth the regional geographical market characteristics. From resin manufacture through converting and printing to application technologies, as well as the ex- isting legislative and recycling challenges, AWAreness Report Global Sleeve Label Market 2021 provides a thorough understanding of the technology today and tomorrow for all involved in the market across the val- ue chain and for those considering future entry. AWA is hosting AWA & TLMI Sleeve Label Industry Conference and Exhibition 2021 in Cincinnati, Ohio, in November 2021. Avery Dennison Focuses On Healthcare Labeling Trends According to a 2019 report by The Freedonia Group, demand for pharmaceutical packaging products in North America is projected to rise 5 percent annu- ally through 2023. The Covid-19 pandemic has only accelerated this trending space. There are challenges, though, and they are specifically centered around the supply chain. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that up to 50 percent of vaccines are wasted globally every year due to improper temperature man- agement in the supply chain. Similarly, according to IQVIA, the biopharma industry loses $35 billion annu- ally as a result of temperature-control failures across supply chains. Avery Dennison, a material and substrate supplier based in Mentor, Oio, has seen strong growth for phar- maceutical labels over the last 18 months in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and corresponding effort of the pharmaceutical industry to develop vaccines and other therapies. The company has also seen two other prominent trends: the growth of biologic drugs and the importance of track-and-trace capabilities. “Biological products often represent the cutting-edge of biomedical research and, in time, may offer the most effective means to treat a variety of medical illnesses and conditions that presently have no other treat- ments available,” explained Cory Keller, Senior Prod- uct Manager – Pharmaceuticals,Avery Dennison.“Most large pharmaceutical companies are now spending 40-50 percent — or more — of their R&D budget on biopharmaceuticals. The industry’s migration to these new medicines injects tremendous complexity into the supply chain as they must be handled within specific condition tolerances such as cold chain, con- trolled room temperature (CRT), and frozen. Failure to maintain appropriate conditions at any point in the supply chain can harm the efficacy of the drug, result in the loss of a shipment, and put patients at risk.” Track-and-trace labeling, meanwhile, is so critical because the counterfeit drug market is the largest fraudulent market in the world. It is valued at roughly $200 billion and results in at least one million deaths per year. “Many pharmaceutical brands consider non-authen- tic drugs to be the biggest threat to their brand,” said Keller. “In 2018, the Protenus’ report found 47.2 mil- lion doses lost due to healthcare employee misuse and theft.Healthcare organizations lost nearly $454 million because of clinical drug diversions.” According to Keller, the Drug Quality and Security Act was enacted by Congress on November 27, 2013 to address these concerns.Title II of DQSA,The Drug

DS Smith Invests In Waste Water Conversion DS Smith as invested 7.5 million Euros in its Rouen, France paper mill to convert more waste water into energy, improve the quality of discharged water, and take another step toward meeting its carbon reduction targets. The Rouen Paper mill produces lightweight recycled fluting that’s used to make corrugated paper, as well light medium, medium, and dual-use papers. It has an annual production output of 280. Rouen produces paper using fibre obtained only from recycled or sustainable sources. Paper for recy- cling goes through a pulping process where it’s mixed with processed water to make a fibre suspension. Im- purities are removed using a series of screens and the waste water is then cleaned and treated through an on-site anaerobic digestion facility before being safely discharged. The process uses micro-organisms, working in the absence of oxygen, and creates biogas that’s converted into sustainable energy by DS Smith partner IDEX.This is then used to provide greener electricity to homes and businesses throughout the Normandy region. By investing in the expansion of Rouen’s anaerobic treatment facility DS Smith is now able to process 100 percent of the waste water produced on-site and, as a result, harvest more of the biogas produced. This could boost the total biogas production of the mill from 26,000 MWh to 39,000 MWh annually, an in- crease of 13,000 MW (50 percent), which will deliver potential savings of up to 2,600 tons of CO2 per year. That’s reportedly equivalent to taking more than 600 small cars off the road every year. Purifying its waste water to create power is anoth- er example of how DS Smith is building the circular economy. As well as reducing our CO2 emissions, bio- gas is a greener alternative as its more circular than other gas fuels due to its biological make up. At Rouen, the investment in expanding the anaerobic digestion system will also reduce the mill’s biological sludge, reducing the number of vehicle movements needed to remove this from the site. As a water-intensive business,DS Smith feels it is vital that its mills consume, recycle and treat the water it uses responsibly and efficiently so that the company complies with all legislative requirements and mini- mizes its impact when it returns water to the natural environment.‘As part of our Now & Next Sustainability Strategy, DS Smith has set climate targets that commit the company to at least a 40 percent reduction in CO2 emissions per ton of production by 2030, compared to 2019 levels, and Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Supply Chain Security Act, once fully implemented in November 2023,will require all members of the supply chain to use an electronic, interoperable system that tracks a drug at the unit level throughout the supply chain until it reaches the patient. This will provide pro- tection against exposure to drugs that may be coun- terfeit, stolen, contaminated, or otherwise harmful. The product identifier must be a standardized graphic in both human-readable format and on a machine-read- able data carrier in a 2D data matrix barcode contain- ing the National Drug Code (NDC) plus a unique serial number, lot number, and an expiration date. By adding track-and-trace capabilities to pharma- ceutical and other healthcare products, the label can help better document and communicate regulatory compliance and faster, more precise recalls. RFID and intelligent labeling can be the best way to accom- plish this feat. “Track-and-trace can help monitor temperature and other conditions to ensure drug quality with passive RFID sensors,” commented Keller. “And RFID gives drug makers and pharmacists more effective ways of communicating about correct product use, enabling improved patient compliance.” Avery Dennison has reportedly developed a wide range of portfolios to meet demand across the health- care landscape. The company’s Pharma Security Solu- tion Portfolio features products that overtly show a product has been tampered with. These include fiber tears, sharp tears, frangible and voids. Plus, the Cold Chain and Cryogenic Portfolio can help ensure clear identification of biological materials from collection to storage, transportation and delivery. “Products in this portfolio feature good adhesion to substrates, including PP, glass, PVC and steel/alumi- num, as well as print compatibility with UV flexo and thermal transfer,” stated Keller. “Good conformability for small diameter containers is also important, as is the ability to withstand multiple freeze-thaw cycles. Suitability for autoclave sterilization is critical, as well. To meet demand for smart solutions, Avery Denni- son’s Pharma Intelligent Label Portfolio consists of RFID inlays to create intelligent labels for multiple use cases. These include track-and-trace (consumer safe- ty, authentication and anti-counterfeiting), inventory management (Improved efficiency and more effective product recalls), and consumer engagement (virtual pharmacist, dosage tracking and more). In addition to enhanced product performance, phar- maceutical companies often desire label materials to come with assurances of component change minimi- zation and robust change notification due to the time
