What Is Sciatica? Sciatica is pain that radiates alongside the sciatic nerve. This nerve, which branches from your lower back — spanning across your hips, buttocks and legs — can be injured or stressed in several ways. The most common cause of sciatica-related pain is inflammation along the spine, where compressed nerves are aggravated. While sciatica pain can be intense, it is treatable. A lot of sciatica cases, in fact, can be resolved without operation — and within just a few weeks. Even if you’ve suffered severe sciatica spawned from leg weakness, bladder changes or nerve issues, there’s still hope. What Causes Sciatica? In most cases, sciatica occurs when one of the back’s discs are injured (bulging/herniated). It can also happen if the spine narrows — an effect called spinal stenosis. As we age, our backs undergo a lot of stress. This stress takes a toll, causing inflammation in several areas. If this inflammation reaches a certain point, it may compress these nerves — resulting in pain.

What Are the Symptoms of Sciatica? Sciatica back pain is normally noticed as a pain radiating from the lower back. Often, this pain extends to the buttock, spiraling down the leg and/or foot. If you’re suffering from sciatica, you might feel the discomfort anywhere along this nerve pathway. The pain itself can be dull, aching or even sharp. In some cases, the compressed nerve may feel like it burns. In other cases, the compressed nerve may simply issue a sharp jolt of pain. Some people experiencing sciatica may experience leg numbness, tingling or weakness. If sciatica isn’t treated, it can hinder mobility altogether. If you are interested in gaining relief from a natural approach to treatment, contact Fyzical today to find out more information.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

JEREMIAH ROSENKRANS, CLINIC DIRECTOR AT ELLENTON Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Before moving to Florida in the winter of 2009, I spend my young years as a happy youth in Pennsylvania. My home State is also where I went to University (Gannon) and I have been blessed to be able tograduatewithanAthleticTraining degreeaswellasaclinicalDoctorate inPhysicalTherapy. My initialplaceof employ was the Meadville Medical Center in Meadville, Pennsylvania. It was here that I realized that my love fortreatingwasnot justwithathletes,

but with weekend warriors and non-athletes as well. Most people fight to stay healthy so they can keep playing ball with their grandkids, attend social events that require greater mobility, or even trying to remain independent in their living situation. In 2011 I joined the amazing team at FYZICAL and since then I have had the honor to assist and guide many people within the Palmetto, Ellenton and Parrish area with the wonderful, conservative gifts of my profession.

FYZICAL PARTNERS WITH MEALS ON WHEELS

At FYZICAL, giving back to the communities where we live and work is part of the foundation of our mission. As you read in last month’s

newsletter, we partner with Meals on Wheels to carry out the mission of helping others in our area. We recently helped to “Stuff The Bus” with 100,000 pounds of food donations to help re-stock the food pantry owned by Meals on Wheels. It was wonderful to get involved in this county-wide collaboration by Publix and give a little bit back to the community.

They really listened to what my issues where and worked on resolving these! “In one month my shoulder pain has improved from presenting with a constant ache and intermittent extreme pain, to a normally functioning shoulder without any pain or limitations. As an active athletic person, it is good to realize that sometimes injuries can happen and that Dr. Chris McGlaughlin and the team at FYZICAL are ready to put us back together again. They really listened to what my issues where and worked on resolving these. They listened to what goals I had and made sure I achieved them. I thanked my doctor for referring me to FYZICAL.” – Alice M.
