KEMPTVILLE | Towards the end of the year, trustees with the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario enjoyed reading a positive report about the past budget plan. During their Nov. 19 board session, trust- ees reviewed a financial report on the 2013- 2014 fiscal year of operations from a repre- sentative with the KPMG auditing firm. The overall financial statement summary was positive. “These results reflect the dedication and accountability of all staff,” stated William J. Gartland, CDSBEO education director, “and our focus on making resources matter, in particular for the success of the student in the classroom. We continue to remain fo- cused on providing the best quality Catho- lic education possible for students in East- ern Ontario.” The financial report noted that the school district met all of the provincial govern- ment’s demands for balanced budgeting by school districts while at the same time meeting special education needs in the district and also maintaining provincial de- mands for smaller teacher-to-student class- room size ratios that would allow teach- There were fewer fatalities on the road in Eastern Ontario over the Christmas holi- days. The OPP East Region office released the results of the annual Festive Ride counterat- tack on impaired driving and other factors that figure in the number of holiday traffic accidents. The number of deaths where failure to wear seatbelts is involved has dropped over the past years in the region though OPP statistics note that the number of alcohol- related traffic fatalities has remained almost constant. The total number of deaths was 48 for the 2014 Christmas season compared to 57 in 2010. The number of alcohol-related deaths last year during the holidays was 8 compared to 12 in 2010. Those deaths involving failure to wear a seatbelt totalled five for 2014 com- pared to 15 in 2010. In Russell County the Festive Ride report recorded one fatal crash incident during the Christmas break in 2014, claiming one life with both alcohol and failure to wear a seatbelt as the key factors. In 2010 there were two fatal crashes in the county, which claimed two lives. One fatality had alcohol as a factor and one fatality involved failure to wear a seatbelt. Festive Ride results

Board trustees reviewed a later revised re- port during their Dec. 16 session. The report includes updates to all projected sources of grants and other supporting revenue, changes in expenses since the original 2014 budget was approved in June this year, and projected enrolment figures for the spring 2015 term. The revised report indicates the CDSBEO may have a small surplus of $380,000 for the 2014-2015 fiscal period.
