To the chair and members of the Board of Trustees,
I wish to register my dissatisfaction with BOT’s response to the overwhelming vote of no confidence in President Wohlpart.
The regular hiring of external consultants is one of the very things that has been noted as problematic under Wohlpart’s tenure. And such a hiring appears particularly pointless in this instance. You say that the goal is to "improve our communication practices, establish shared expectations, and deliver shared accountability across the university community.” Yet the contents of the petition for the VNC already make clear that the failures in these matters have been on the part of President Wohlpart. I doubt that trust is even possible now between him and the faculty. But it will certainly not be achieved by hiring a consultant to talk to all of us about how to communicate better. The faculty have already been communicating very clearly to President Wohlpart. The petition for the VNC was simply our final attempt to make our message heard. There were 49 voices in that petition. Now there are 306 voices saying that we do not trust President Wohlpart to lead CWU. For the BOT to imply that faculty have been failing to communicate well, or that we have been uninterested in shared accountability, is immensely frustrating. It bespeaks the same disdainful attitude that has gotten CWU into this situation to begin with. Yours sincerely, Gary Bartlett Professor of Philosophy
